Ms. Veronica Renee Hammond

Veronica Renée Hammond passed away peacefully, surrounded by love. A devoted mother, grandmother, woman of faith, and community advocate, Veronica lived a life rooted in service, strength, and purpose. Veronica was born and raised on the southside of Chicago. Although her parents reared her with her siblings, she spent a great deal of time with her grandmother, Lucy Williams, and aunt Eva Whitaker Jackson. Her grandmother told her stories of her own childhood in Comer, GA. Later in life, Veronica came to live in Gwinnett County, GA, not too many miles from Comer. Veronica attended Hartigan Elementary School and Wendell Phillips High School. She briefly attended Loyola University before joining the workforce. As a single mother, she lovingly raised her children, Marcus Eugene (Lakeya) and Jennifer Yvonne, instilling in them resilience, compassion, and unwavering faith. She also embraced her role as a loving godmother to her bonus daughter, Michele. She was the proud grandmother of Marcus Alexander Hammond, Kristopher Alonzo Hammond, Kayla Alyssa Hammond, and Micah Javon Gary, who brought her immense joy and pride. Veronica is survived by her sisters, Yvonne and Marion Rochelle (Gregory), and her brother, David (Maxine). She was preceded in death by her parents, John Otha and Mayola, and her beloved siblings, Susie Mae, Henry, Donald, Ronald, and Alonzo. She spent many years working for Cook County. Still, she dedicated most of her service to the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District (MWRD), where she was respected for her diligence and warm spirit. She retired after 38 years of service in 1998. Veronica found joy in traveling, keeping up with her favorite soap operas and court shows, and savoring an excellent cup of coffee. She was deeply committed to helping others and lived a life steeped in volunteerism and service. She absolutely adored her grandchildren, her nieces and nephews, and their children. There was never a need or want she didn’t try to fulfill. A woman of conviction, Veronica was actively engaged in the fight for justice and equality. She proudly attended the March on Washington in 1963 and continued to stand for what was right by participating in protests throughout the 1960s and 1970s. She was also a dedicated member of Rainbow PUSH Coalition/Operation Breadbasket. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. She grew up at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church and later attended Normal Park United Methodist Church as a young adult. In 1970, she became a founding member of Faith United Methodist Church, where she served faithfully until illness limited her attendance in 2000. Even then, her devotion never wavered, as she continued to worship online. Before relocating to Georgia in 2016, she had often attended Trinity United Church of Christ with her daughter and later became an online member in October 2019. Veronica also expressed her love for music and praise and worship through singing in the Susie Mae Hammond Women’s Ensemble, named in honor of her late sister. She lived by the words, “You have to stand for something, or you will fall for anything,” and held close the scripture, Joshua 24:15, “But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Veronica was blessed to have bonus family members: Althenese Cook-Willis, Kevin and Annie Willis, and son Theodore; bonus son, Eric Pulliam, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and close family members, in Illinois, Georgia, and various parts of the country. Veronica lived a full life, just a few weeks shy of 89 years. Her legacy is one of love, faith, courage, and service. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her. She will forever be in our hearts.
