Susan Williams

Susan Williams was born on June 27, 1938 in Rimini, South Carolina to the late Reverend January Nelson and the late Mrs. Pearl Nelson. Susan was the 3rd oldest of 5 children. She attended Manchester High School in Sumter County obtaining a high school diploma. Early in life, around the age of 12, Susan accepted Christ as her personal Savior at Antioch AME Church. She loved to sing and was a choir member and a youth usher. She frequently attended Sunday School and Bible School every summer. In 1957, immediately following high school graduation, Susan moved to New York City to live with her aunt and for employment. There she met Johnny (Joe) Louis Williams. They dated and were married in 1958. This union produced one daughter, Shirley Williams-Zackery. Johnny and Susan lived on Long Island, New York and became members of First Baptist Church of Bayshore. They both were avid servers with Susan singing in the Adult Choir. Susan also worked for the United States Postal Services for over 23 years. After retirement, they decided to move to Atlanta Georgia to be near their grandchildren. It was at that time, a minister at First Baptist Church of Bayshore urged them to make sure they visit New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. They moved to Georgia in December of 1992, visited New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and became members in early 1993. At New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Susan served on two usher ministries. She first joined the Adult Usher Ministry. Later, she joined Usher Ministry #1. Susan was also a member of the Mother Board. When Susan’s health began to decline, she never gave up on her faith in what God can do. This faith in God kept her fighting. One of Susan’s all-time favorite songs was “We fall down but we get up” by Donnie McClurkin. Her favorite scripture was Isaiah 61:3 – He makes beauty from the ashes. On August 6, 2018, God called Susan to enter His gates for eternal rest. Susan was truly loved by her family and is survived by, with sweet memories, her devoted, attentive and caring husband Johnny Williams, her loving daughter Shirley Williams-Zackery, her step-son Clinton Williams of Adel, GA, two grandchildren, Johnny (Meghan) Zackery of Winston-Salem, NC, Danielle Zackery of Snellville , GA and two great-granddaughters Raquelle Alston and Mia Zackery, all whom she adored and lived for, two sisters – Wilhemenia Nelson of Sumer, SC and Willene Dupree of Pinewood, SC, one brother, Eddie Lee (Penny) Richardson, Bronx, NY, two sisters-in-law, JoAnn Jennings of Conyers GA and Carolyn Williams of Lithonia, GA, a nephew that she loved as if her own son, Rodney (Linda) Nelson of Brooklyn, NY and a host of other beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, extended family and friends. Susan’s favorite saying…”And ALWAYS REMEMBER, God loves you and so do it!” Homegoing services for Ms. Susan Williams of Snellville, GA will be held Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, 6400 Woodrow Rd, Lithonia, GA 30038. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Family Hour from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at Gregory B.
