Shemika Jenae' Morris

Shemika Jenae’ Morris entered the world on November 1, 1979, to Audrey Maxwell Morris and George Morris in Kingstree, SC. Shemika was christened at St. Mary A.M.E. Church in Salters, SC, by Reverend Ravenel. At age two, Shemika, along with her mother and father, moved to Rochester, NY. They resided in Rochester until 1988 at which time Shemika and her mother relocated to Decatur, GA. At the age of nine, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and joined St. Philip A.M.E. Church in Atlanta, GA, with the late Reverend George Moore. She was a member of the Angelic Choir and attended Junior Church. She remained at St. Philip A.M.E until her transition. She also remained a member of her home church in South Carolina and often visited to sing on special programs. Shemika began her formal education in preschool at Ibero Day Care in Rochester, NY. After daycare, she entered kindergarten at St. Barnabas Catholic School in Rochester, NY through third grade. After moving to the Atlanta area, she attended Peachcrest Elementary School, Snapfinger Elementary School, Hambrick Elementary School, Stone Mountain Middle School, and Stone Mountain High School where she graduated in 1997. After high school, she matriculated at Clark Atlanta University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. After college, she was employed with Verizon and DeKalb County Schools. Her passion for music and entertainment led her to work on a Masters degree at Columbia College in Chicago, IL. After returning to DeKalb County, she worked as a paraprofessional in several schools. Shemika loved family and was often center stage at all family events either singing one of her favorite songs, re-enacting a memorable event, or telling her comical stories. She aspired to be a professional singer and was in the process of organizing a recording session. Shemika was creative. In addition to her love of singing, she was a makeup artist, jewelry designer, writer and fashionista. Shemika was preceded in death by her maternal grandfathers, Douzette Maxwell and James Frank Parker; her paternal grandmothers, Alberta Morris and Dorothy Brooks; her paternal grandfathers, Nolie Morris and Floyd Brooks; an uncle, Nolie Morris; and two aunts, Annie Morris and Betty Morris. Shemika leaves to cherish her memories her father, George Morris, of Kingstree, SC; her loving and supportive mother, Dr. Audrey V. Brooks and a devoted Dad, Kevin Brooks of Stone Mountain, GA; and a loving grandmother, Mrs. Ethel Lee Parker. Shemika is also survived by three brothers, Brandon George Morris and Joshua Morris of Rochester, NY; and Isaiah Whitlock of New York. She has one sister, Shemore Morris, of Rochester, NY. Shemika had uncles who adored her and treated her as if she were their child. Her uncles are Dr. Charles (Roberta) Maxwell of Decatur, GA; Bert Maxwell of Los Angeles, CA; Bernard Morris of Rochester, NY; Floyd (Patricia) Brooks, Jr., Jimmie Lee Brooks, George (Genita) Brooks, and Craig Brooks, all of Muskegon, MI; and Andrew Brooks of Decatur, GA. Shemika was also blessed by aunts who admired her charisma and cherish fond memories. Her aunts are Lt. Colonel Army (Retired) Janice (Joe) Fulton of Columbia, SC; Andrea (1SG Ret. Bryan) Jett of Conyers, GA, Thelma Morris and Pearlie Morris of Rochester, NY; Linda Howell of Detroit, MI; Katherine Brown of Flint, MI; Janie Pearl (Tyrone) Davis, Carolyn (Ray) Alexander, and Marilyn Brooks, all of Meskegon, MI. Additionally, Shemika was loved, cherished, and enjoyed by a multitude of family and friends.
