Mr. John Lively

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on October 8, 1952, to John Henry Lively and Lucille Reeves, John was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Johnnie Cannon, brothers, Gerald Reeves (Monecia) and Charles Dotson. John leaves behind his brother-in-law, Carl Cannon (Delores), his niece, Crystal Brooks (Alfred), and nephews, Jonathan Reeves, Kendrick Reeves, and Cory Dotson. Great-nephews, Bryce and Christian Brooks. He also leaves behind his adopted sister, Verna Payne. Some people leave their mark on the world through wealth, fame, or extraordinary achievements. Then, some rare souls leave something more enduring — the memory of a kind heart, unwavering work ethic, and a smile that made ordinary days a little brighter. John Lively was one of those people. John's life was a testament to the perseverance, dignity, and quiet power of character. Born with special needs and never having the opportunity to receive a formal education, John accomplished more than many might have expected. He never allowed others' expectations to define his future. Instead, he defined himself through determination, integrity, and an infectious joy for life. John lived an early life guarded by his mother and protected, as at that time, there weren't any special needs programs to help them navigate his unique needs. In 1988, John moved to Atlanta, where he was reunited with his sister, her husband, and his niece. At the age of 36, John began what would become far more than a job; it became a calling. At Publix supermarket, he quickly became one of the most beloved employees the store has ever known. From the day the store opened until the day he retired, John earned the admiration of customers, co-workers, and managers alike. His work ethic was beyond question. He believed that if he was on the clock, he owed his employer his very best. He never cut corners, never looked for the easy way out, and never gave less than his full effort. He approached every task, no matter how small, with pride and purpose. But what truly set John apart wasn't simply how hard he worked; it was how he made people feel. His smile became legendary. Customers often chose to stand in longer checkout lines, simply because they hoped John would bag their groceries, greet them warmly, and walk them to their cars. To hundreds of people, John transformed a routine trip to the grocery store into a moment of human connection. His kindness asked for nothing in return, yet it left lasting impressions on countless lives. John wore his passions proudly. If you met him, there was a good chance that one of the first things you heard was "I'm a Dallas Cowboys fan." His enthusiasm for his favorite football team was contagious, and he loved sharing that excitement with anyone willing to listen. In retirement, John discovered a new passion: following politics and the daily news. During Vice President Kamala Harris' presidential campaign, he became an enthusiastic supporter. Although he may not have understood every complexity of the political process, he understood something just as important: standing behind someone he believed in. John never hesitated to tell friends, family, or even strangers that he believed she was qualified to lead the nation. His sincerity and conviction reflected the same authenticity that defined every part of his life. John taught those around him lessons that cannot be learned in a classroom. He demonstrated that success is not measured by titles or degrees, but by honesty, dedication, compassion, and the lives we touch along the way. He showed us that every person has gifts to offer, and that the simplest acts — a smile, a helping hand, a kind word — can become life's greatest legacy. John entered hospice care in his final days, and after only a short stay, he passed peacefully on June 29, 2026, resting quietly and free of pain. Those who loved him take comfort in knowing that his transition was gentle, just as his spirit had always been. To know John was to experience genuine warmth, unwavering loyalty, and a spirit that found joy in everyday moments. His life reminds us that greatness is often not found in extraordinary accomplishments, but in an extraordinary faithfulness to ordinary things. John leaves behind a legacy of perseverance, humility, kindness, and love. Though his smile is no longer seen in the grocery aisles he faithfully served for so many years, it lives on in the hearts of everyone fortunate to have known him. His work is finished. His race is run, and his reward is secure. We celebrate a life that mattered — not because of what he had, but because of who John was.
