Emory Lamont Houston

On August 4th, 2026, Emory Lamont Houston stepped gently into eternal rest at age 77, leaving behind a legacy of service, leadership, and love. Lamont touched countless lives and made the world a kinder place simply by being in it. Born on September 15, 1946, in Roanoke, Alabama, to the late William and Edith Houston, Lamont was the younger of two children and spent much of his childhood in Chicago. Lamont earned an Electrical Engineering degree in 1972 from Tuskegee University. Tuskegee became much more than his alma mater; it was where he formed lifelong friendships, developed a devotion to the university, and met the love of his life, Gwendolyn Martin Houston. Following graduation, Lamont joined Georgia Power as one of the company’s first black engineers. During a distinguished 38-year career, he served in numerous engineering and leadership roles, earning the respect of colleagues and communities alike, ultimately retiring as Senior Vice President of Customer Service and Sales. Committed to being a lifelong learner, he earned an Executive MBA from Georgia State University and completed the Harvard Business School’s Advanced Management Program. While his professional accomplishments were many, Lamont was most passionate about serving others. He dedicated his time and talents by serving in leadership roles with a host of organizations including the American Cancer Society, United Way, Art Station, Atlanta Neighborhood Development Partnership, and the Boy Scouts of America. He also served in leadership positions with three different chambers of commerce throughout the Atlanta area. Among his most meaningful achievements was serving as a founding member of the 100 Black Men of DeKalb County, where he later served as President and Chairman of the Board. Lamont was a gifted mentor and storyteller. Whether through thoughtful conversation, one of his great stories, sharing his own life experience, or telling a well-timed joke, he inspired those around him to preserve, believe in themselves, and strive for excellence. He shared wisdom generously, stood firmly on what was right, and led with integrity, humility, and compassion. A proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, he also enjoyed golf, reading, and returning to Tuskegee for homecomings and football games. In addition to his parents, Lamont was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Houston, and his niece, Gabrielle Houston. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Gwen Houston; children, Donald Houston (Annie), Gina Smith (Gerard), and David Houston; uncle Laurence O’Neal; aunt Erma Simon; and a host of cousins, extended family, cherished friends, colleagues, and mentees.
