It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of Cornelia F. Chatman. A beloved mother, grandmother, sister, wife, and friend. Cornelia departed this world peacefully on March 25, 2026 at the age of 79. Her life, filled with love resilience, family and a deep sense of community, will be celebrated at Gregory B. Levett & Sons. Located at 4347 Flat Shoals Pkwy. Decatur, Ga. 30034 on April 11, 2026 at 11:00 am. Born on August 2, 1946 in Carrollton, Ga. to Willie Roy Florence Sr. and Luevencis Walker. She was surrounded by the love of two older and two younger brothers. She grew, learned, and matured in Chattanooga, Tn. before attending college for two years at Tennessee State University. From there she relocated to Atlanta where she started her own life and family. She was preceded in death by her loving parents and brothers Willie Jr., Harold & Calvin Florence and son Stephen B. Smith. Despite life’s challenges Cornelia’s spirit remained unbroken and her heart continued to expand with love for her surviving family and friends. Cornelia’s journey through life was defined by her dedication to her family and community. She was a devoted mother to her son’s Mark & David Chatman and Steven Smith. And had a friendly, close association with Alex Wilhite. An enduring relationship with her brother Bennie Florence and loving sister in law Mattie. Along with grandchildren Andrea Haigood, Briston, Brion & Cornell “CP” Chatman. And great grandchildren Easton, Roman, & Eli were sources of immense joy her life. Cornelia’s family also included numerous extended family, friends and loved ones who were touched by her kindness and generosity. Cornelia’s further academic pursuits lead her to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she earned a Master of Arts in Social work. Her professional journey in life took her from Atlanta Gas & Light Co. to the Atlanta Police Department. She worked at Smith Transfer in Chattanooga before closing out her career at The Georgia Sensory and Rehabilitation Center for the blind and hearing impaired. Cornelia’s commitment to work was matched only by her dedication to her faith. An active member of Greator Second Baptist Church, she sang in the choir and instilled a love of faith and community in her sons. Beyond her professional and community achievements, Cornelia was a woman of diverse interests. She had a profound love of reading, music & crossword puzzles. All of which she passed on to her sons. Always humming a tune, her joy of music was infectious and her home was filled with warmth and song. Cornelia’s small stature belied the immense love and care she carries within her. She was always ready lend a hand to those in need. Cornelia Chatman leaves behind a life of love, compassion, strength, and tenacity. Her life was a testament to the power of kindness and the importance of family. As we gather to celebrate her life, we remember her not only for the roles she played but also for the love she shared with those around her. Her spirit will continue to resonate in the hearts of all those who had the privilege to know her. As we say goodbye to this remarkable woman let us carry forth her legacy of love and kindness and strive to be as generous and caring as Cornelia was throughout her life.
