Betty M. Ancrum

Betty Mae Ancrum was born on October 10, 1946 in Charleston, South Carolina to the late Thelma Wigfall Shaw and stepfather Bennie Lee Shaw and departed this life on February 1, 2017 in Melbourne, FL. She was married to the love of her life, the late Robert Louis Ancrum. Betty was a colorful and lively spirit who engaged people with her soft-spoken voice and vibrant personality. She had one of the most powerful spirits full with love, joy, peace and grace. A neighbor describes her as one of the kindest persons she had ever met. She would compliment you in a way that made you feel as if she knew and cared about everything that was going on in your life. Her infectious laugh was certain to bring a smile to any face around her, yet her dismay with your actions would also be communicated through the “sucking of her teeth” and “rolling of her eyes.” Oh, how we will miss those signature expressions of our beloved “BT” as called by her beloved late husband Robert. A woman of style, Betty adored hats and proudly wore an array of them with her own eclectic elegance. You very seldom caught her slipping when it came to fashion, she was stylish and well put together with closets full of clothes to prove it. Betty worked in logistics at the Naval shipyard in Charleston and was cited in the newspaper as the first woman forklift driver at the shipyard. She accepted Christ into her heart and Her faith was very important to her as illustrated in her prayer life and love of the Word. Betty not only talked about the Bible or Christianity, she lived it daily! Family is one word that describes Betty. She loved her parents and shared stories about life lessons from her beloved grandmother, Georgiana. Being the oldest of 10 children, she shared special relationships with all of her siblings, and they were often the topic of conversation. Betty was fiercely protective of her children and took pride in her home and especially her meals. “Beans” as she was affectionately called by family and friends was an exceptional cook and enjoyed good food and preparing meals for her family. Everyone wanted to place their feet under her dinner table and enjoy her latest creation. You were never a stranger in her presence or at her table, because she made you feel a part of her family. Her huge presence will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Those left to carry on her sweet spirit are her children: Ramona Turner Scott (Juan), Tonnia Turner Smalls (Mitchum), Ronald Turner, Jr., Essence Turner-Ancrum, and Nikkia Turner-Ancrum. Her siblings, Osborn L. Shaw (Susan), Peggy A. Haynes (Issac), Sandra A. Kearse (Carroll), Karen R. Robinson (Timothy), Lenoir R. Russell (Jeremiah), Cheryl R. Shaw, Dernice Armbrust (Dwight), Geona Shaw-Johnson (Charles), Bennie L. Shaw (Michelle); aunt Emily White, ; uncle Sherman Shaw. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
