Verlon Wilson earned her wings and transitioned into glory to meet her Heavenly Father on July 11, 2022. Verlon Michele “Sheil” Wilson was born the second of six children to Bernice and the late Leon W. Smith Sr. in Portsmouth, VA, on March 2, 1959. Michele, or Sheil as her family called her, grew up in Queens, NY. There, she found her love for music, particularly the marching band, theater, and the arts. As a child, Sheil learned how to maintain and manage a household at the tender age of 10 years old. She loved spending time with her parents, five siblings, extended family, and friends. She was not afraid to spread her wings and make her mark on the world and, at the age of 18, moved to Portsmouth, VA, to live with her grandparents, the late Sylvester and Margaret Smith while attending college at Norfolk State University. She earned her B.A. in Psychology from Norfolk State University in 1981. Michele also found the love of her life, Alton Wilson, while attending Norfolk State University. The couple were introduced by a mutual friend and nun under the direction of God and were married on July 1, 1981. Throughout her professional career, Michele served in various occupations: a state penitentiary corrections officer, interior designer, special education teacher, counselor, bank teller, and lastly, a Tax Examiner for the IRS. Michele spent 20 years with the IRS and officially retired from that agency on March 31, 2021. Despite serving in several roles during her lifetime, there was no greater role Michele loved more than being a wife and mother. Michele and Alton recently celebrated 41 years of marriage on July 1, 2022. Their loving union produced three beautiful children, son Andre and fraternal twin daughters, Kelly and Tara. Her husband and children meant everything to her. Michele also dearly loved her mother, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, godchildren, friends, coworkers, mentors, and mentees. Michele served as a rock that her family and friends could lean on in times of trouble. She was everyone’s therapist. Michele was preceded in death by her father, Leon W. Smith Sr., grandparents, Sylvester and Margaret Smith, sisters Tracy Smith and Vercalla Stepfaine Smith, nephews Tennyson Smith and Dashon Borden, and uncles Clifford Jones and Thomas Dowdy. She is survived by her husband, Alton Wilson; children, Andre, Kelly, and Tara Wilson; siblings Anita (Darren) Borden, Leon W. (Tracey) Smith Jr., and Lenice (Randolph) Fallins; a slew of nieces, nephews, godchildren, cousins, and friends. Whether you called her Verlon, Michele, Sheil, or Aunt Sheil, you were met with the same loving, “telling it like it is” spirit.
