Mrs. Mattie Renee Herring

Mattie Renee Herring was born on July 30, 1963, in Compton, California to the parents of Elder Elton Herring and Cassie Anita (Calhoun) Herring. She was the third child of seven children: five boys and two girls. Mattie was known as Renee to her friends, "Nae" to her family and "Nae-Nae" to her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Traveling was her best thing to do, if you know Renee, you know that she was going somewhere whether it was to get in the car or hop on the plane because "Renee is going to enjoy her life". She even created a "girls’ trip" with her lovely friends every year to celebrate her birthday and would have a ball every time. She absolutely loved people, "never met a stranger" and she would talk to anybody. Renee was the '#1 planner and the go to person when planning an event when necessary. Renee was raised in a Christian home in which her parents instilled in her the importance of salvation. At an early age, eight years old, Renee accepted Christ and was baptized during her membership at New Hope Church (COCHUSA) in Long Beach, California. In 1974 her dad, upon the leading of the Lord, relocated the family to Dallas, Texas to organize a church, Zion (COCHUSA). Renee’s faith was strong and continued to grow stronger under the leadership of her father Pastor Elton Herring. After four years in Dallas, the family returned to Long Beach, California, where her dad was selected to Pastor New Hope (COCHUSA) in Long Beach, California. Renee returned as a high school student and attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School. She graduated from Poly, Class of 1981. She had multiple scholarship opportunities to attend colleges/universities upon graduation and she decided to attend California State University Long Beach to pursue a career in nursing. In 1982, Renee gave birth to her first-born son, Jason Dejuan. In 1984, while working at the Naval Shipyard in Long Beach, Renee met the love of her life, Arlandus Hood Sr. This relationship produced two children, her second born son, Arlandus Jr. “Woo” and her only daughter Ashleigh Monai-Anita. Renee re-dedicated her life to the Lord in 1988. Her new understanding of the word of God drew her to recommit her life to Christ. Renee moved to Atlanta in 1994 in pursuit of change and financial security for her children. In 1995, Renee met Gil Bradley, and got married in 1997, to this union was born Javoris Dwight, her baby boy. Although Renee and Gil separated in 2005, their love for one another remained. Renee was a dedicated working woman. She started working at the age of 14 and obtained her first government job at the age of 19. After over 40 years of working with the federal government, she proudly retired from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in September 2024. The scriptures states, he that hath a friend must show him/herself friendly. Renee had many true, lifelong friendships, friendships that exceed 55 years. She also created sister-friendship bonds with her work colleagues, her classmates and others that included girl trips, regular phone calls and coordinating birthday celebrations and family/class reunions. She enjoyed being on the committee for her family/class reunions to not only be able to help but to enjoy interacting with everyone. Her relationship with Christ was important and she believed it was important to have a church membership. Renee was a member of the following churches as an adult, New Hope ( COCHUSA) - pastored by her dad , Beulah/Higher Calling (COCHUSA) - pastored by , Bishop Vonzell Castilla , New Life, Pastor Harris, and her current membership with Abundant Grace, Pastor Jones. In 2020, Renee unfortunately was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She fought and strongly believed God for her healing. As the head strong person she is, even while battling cancer, Renee didn't allow it to stop her from living. On Sunday, October 27,2024 her earthly body succumb to cancer but her soul, spiritual body was healed. No more pain, no more suffering and Renee is now eternally healed!! “By His stripes she was healed”. Renee was preceded in death by her dear mother Cassie Anita (Calhoun) Herring, her beautiful granddaughter, Azaylah Denae Stewart and the love of her life, Arlandus Hood Sr. Renee loved her children and grandchildren. She was committed to showing up , being there to support and cheer them on with all their endeavors including sporting events and major life accomplishments. She leaves to cherish her memories with her four children: Jason DeJuan Marshall (Lapreicia), Arlandus Hood Jr., Ashleigh Monai-Anita Hood, and Javoris Dwight Bradley. Her loving father: Elder Elton Herring; Her beautiful grandchildren; Jadyn Marshall, Ace Marshall, Lonnie ”Poppy” Stewart, Arlon Stewart, Ashton Hood, Michaela Ricketts, Naomi Hood and Zoe Hood. Her siblings, Cornelius Anthony Herring, Marcus Theopolis Herring, Elton Kendal "Tookie" Herring, Michael Elgin Herring (Beverly Michelle), Tammie Vinita Wilson (Joseph), Alan Brian Herring. A host of nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins, extended family, friends and sister- friends. Renee strongly believed in Jesus, she accepted him, confessed and was saved.
