    Emma Elder

    October 16, 1935 - May 1, 2022

    Ms. Emma Elder was born on October 16, 1935 to Mr. Wilbur Elder, Sr. and Mrs. Cozzie Mae Tolbert/ Elder in Coweta, County Georgia. She was the oldest of six siblings. She graduated from Benedict College in Columbia, SC where she joined the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and soon thereafter returning to Newnan, Ga and began her teaching career at Fairmount Elementary School. She went on to earn her Master's Degree from Atlanta University and was the first African American hired at Laurel Ridge Elementary School in Decatur, Ga where she retired after thirty five (35) years of teaching in every level of Elementary education. She was also a member of the Greenforest Community Baptist Church in Decatur, Ga. She is preceded in death by her two younger sisters, Mary Ann Elder/Collins (Willie) and Annie Pearl Elder/Walden. She has many, many nieces and nephews and a group of students who loved her too.
