Adrian L. Hughley

A Time to Be Born Lieutenant Colonel Adrian Hughley (Retired) was born in Columbus, Georgia (East Wynnton). He was the only child of the late Sheryl Hughley. At an early age, he accepted Christ and was an active member of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church. He served as a junior usher, choir member, and Baptist Training Union member. He was also involved in the Boys and Girls’ Club. A Time to Grow Adrian's educational journey began at Carver High School in Columbus, Georgia, where he was active in sports (especially football). After graduating, he attended Albany State University, participated in ROTC, and graduated with a Criminal Justice degree. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. Later, he attended Troy University, graduating with a Master’s Degree in Human Resources. A Time to Build Adrian served in the United States Army from 1995 to 2016, retiring as Lt. Colonel. During his military career, he deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, was stationed in Hawaii, Korea, and served as Commander of Atlanta’s Military Entrance Processing Center (US Army). Adrian also furthered his education, including courses such as Airborne (1995), INF Off Basic (1995), Air Assault (1996), COMB ARMS SVC STF SCH (1999), INF Off Advanced (1999), Brad in FGT EH CDR CR (2000), Total Army INSTR TNG (2000), Human Resources MGMT (2004), ILE Qua Non-Resident (2008), and Equal Opportunity Advisor CRS (2012). He also was well-awarded, including Iraq Campaign Medal with Two Campaign Stars, Bronze Star Medal (2nd Award), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (3rd Award), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal (2nd Award), Served in Designated Imminent Danger Area, War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Expert Infantryman, Parachutist Badge, and Air Assault Badge. Adrian was a member of New Beginning Full Gospel Baptist Church. There, he got involved in church school, Couple’s Ministry, and Veteran’s Ministry. Most of all, he dedicated himself to the church youth as the Curriculum Director for Boys to Men Christian Ministry. His favorite scripture was Matthew 5:8: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” A Time to Love Adrian loved, supported, and cherished his family: he welcomed opportunities to help others and never met a stranger. Friends affectionately called him “Hugo.” When he talked to family, he always ended conversations by saying, “I Love You.” After retirement, his hobbies included gardening, carpentry, and fishing. He had several phrases, however, one of his favorites was “I ain’t never bother nobody.” Adrian was preceded in death by Frank Gilcrest Geddes; his grandmothers Ruby Williams and Sarah Billins. A Time For Peace Adrian leaves his loving family to cherish his memory, including his loving wife, Shanta; daughters Serena Hughley (Harvard Law School, Cambridge, MA), Jasmine Hughley (Howard University, Washington, DC), LaShonda Allen (Brooklyn, New York), Christina Robinson (Augusta, Georgia); grandchildren, Kaison and Lulu; attentive, caring, and supportive, father-in-love, Jimmy McCauley (Kansas City, MS); aunts and uncles,: Aaron Williams (Patricia), Claudette Williams (Hardy), Von Hughley, Rita Mahone (Richard), Kim Hosecloth (Keith), Samuel Billins (Pat), Ethel A. Holley (Ralph), Norris Billins (Danita), Alford Billins, Robbin Reed (Chuck), Zachery Billins; three special in-laws, nieces, nephews and a host of cousins, other relatives, and loving friends.
