Wilhelmenia Bonds

Wilhelmenia Latimer Bonds was affectionately known as Menia. Let us share with you a little about our special mom. She recently lost her battle with cancer. And what a fight it was! She maintained her grace, strength, and courage until the end. As a young girl, Wilhelmenia was known as “Cherry.” She was the second of eight children born to the late Clyde Latimer and Willie Mae Griffin Latimer. Clyde and Willie Mae raised their large family in the Summer Hill community of Atlanta, Georgia. Wilhelmenia enjoyed playing with her siblings. She loved reading and became a good student. She also loved reading the bible. Her personal library included several translations of the bible, numerous study guides, and handwritten study notes. Wilhelmenia was baptized in Salem Baptist church. Her formal education began in the Atlanta school system. This included Price High School where she graduated in 1958. Hard work and focus allowed her to earn a full academic scholarship to Spelman College. Before completing Spelman, she started a family. She married Richard L. Glover in 1961. They had two children together, Michelle and Sharon. Around this time, she began a long, successful career with the U.S. Postal Service. Growing up in the sometimes-tough Summerhill community gave her the grit and determination needed as a black woman in a white man’s dominated workforce. She started as a mail carrier but was later promoted as the first black female supervisor. She continued to take on greater levels of responsibility until becoming Postmaster. She was responsible for customer service, delivery, and retail operations for half a million customers. She retired as Postmaster of Memphis in 1995. While in Memphis, she met and married Clifton (Cliff) Bonds. Cliff introduced her to a community of loyal friends including Rev. Kenneth Robinson, MD and his wife Rev. Marilynn. The Robinsons introduced her to the AME faith. Wilhelmenia served as the Administrative Officer for St. Andrew AME Church under the leadership of the Robinsons. Wilhelmenia traveled extensively before and after her retirement. She visited many of the ancient and modern wonders of the world, including the Great wall of China, Egyptian pyramids, European palaces and mud huts in Africa. She and Cliff were baptized in the Jordan River in Israel. Wilhelmenia shared her professional and life knowledge throughout her life. She mentored staff and colleagues and was active in her community as a mentor to less fortunate youths. Although her body weakened, her mind remained sharp. She kept her dry humor, sharp wit and concern for others until the end. Wilhelmenia was predeceased by her parents, siblings: Betty, Doris, Walter, Clarence, and Johnny; and her first husband, Richard. Her husband Cliff also preceded her in death. Wilhelmenia leaves to cherish her memory two daughters: Michelle and her husband Timothy Brown, and Sharon Glover; two brothers: Reginald and his wife Lorraine Latimer and Charles and his wife Donna Latimer; one granddaughter: Alexandria and her family, husband Stancil Courtney and sons, Dedrick, Dimitri, and Dominic Jamerson. Wilhelmenia is also survived by many other relatives. Her circle of loving, devoted friends is too numerous to list. The Celebration of Life Service for Wilhelmenia Bonds will be held on Friday, August 7, 2026 at 11:00 AM. This service will be recorded and streamed live.
