Vivian Elaine Prather

Vivian Elaine Prather was born June 17, 1954, to the late Lizzie Mae and Charlie Lee Stinson in Lagrange, Georgia (Troup County). She was preceded in death by her mother Lizzie Mae Stinson, father Charlie Lee Stinson, and brother Harry Evans. Vivian attended Fredrick Douglas High School as the Astros first graduating class of 1972. After graduating high school in 1972, she started her career with General Motors Corporation in Atlanta, Georgia at the Lakewood Plant as an assembly line worker and ended her career working in their Human Resources Office. Later, she retired from General Motors Corporation in 2006, after working for 35 years. She attended Dekalb Technical College where she earned an Associate Degree in Cosmetology. She also worked at Greater Piney Grove as the Outreach Director. In 1973, she found Our Lady Perpetual Help Home to help care for her mother Lizzie Mae Stinson who resided at “The Home” as a cancer patient. She spent over 40 years volunteering at Our Lady Perpetual Help Home. She spent many years feeding patients, reading to patients, and shampooing hair in patient’s beds. Everyone there loved her, as Sister Eugenia became one of her best friends and a part of the family. She spent many Christmases celebrating with her other beloved family. She started a bi-monthly routine of taking her children Adrienne and Darian to volunteer at “The Home”. She eventually was hired as “The Home’s” Cosmetologist where she serviced many patients over the years. In 1980, she and her family joined The Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church under the leadership of Frank Jones. She quickly joined the Usher Board, Nurse Ministry, and Outreach Ministry. The Greater Piney Grove became her beloved family as she made many loving and lasting friendships with so many individuals at the church. Serving others was her passion as she adored all auxiliaries but her “favorite” one was the Nursing Ministry. Sister LaRue, Annette, and Nelle were some of her close friends from these auxiliaries. She left Greater Piney Grove for a few years and joined Piney Grove as she stated that God wanted her to serve at a different church. After a few years she rejoined The Greater Piney Grove and Pastor Flippin, and the members welcomed her back with open arms. When she came back it was as if she never left. She served and attended and cooked for many funerals at “Piney Grove”. Vivian enjoyed spending quality time with both of her grandsons. She loved taking her grandson Joshua to church and Sunday School. He loved going to church with his grandma as much as she enjoyed taking him with her. As she made sure that she was going to take her baby to church with her. Followed by enjoying the tradition of taking her grandson Niko to dinner every Sunday! After retirement she started a career at Atlanta Youth Academy in the aftercare and would fill-in as a substitute teacher when the school needed her. She loved “her children” and her children loved her. She built many friendships with many of the faculty and staff at the school. No matter what job she had her work ethic was impeccable. Vivian was affectionally called “Elaine” by her friends and family! She enjoyed cooking and hosting family and friends at her home for numerous holidays such as New Year’s breakfast, Easter dinner, Mother’s Day, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July, Labor Day, and other random days throughout the years. She enjoyed having her friends and family over to sit out and have conversations on her back patio. Also, Vivian enjoyed traveling as Jerry’s Travel was her go-to company to plan many of the trips that she took over that last 40 plus years. She loved traveling with her siblings, friends, children, and grandchildren. One of her favorite places to travel was the casino. She visited casinos in Biloxi, Las Vegas, Cherokee, Montgomery, Wetumpka, Shorter, and the most recent one in Cleveland, Ohio. She would stay for hours as this was an enjoyment for her! On April 4, 2023, Vivian was quietly met by the angels to continue her journey home. She leaves to cherish her memory: her loving daughter Adrienne Prather Battle of Atlanta, GA and devoted son Darian Prather of Atlanta, GA. Two loving grandsons Niko Brown of Atlanta, GA and Joshua Battle of Atlanta, GA. Her cherished siblings brother Nathaniel Stinson (Brenda) of Jonesboro, GA, brother Charles Stinson (Sonya) of Warner Robbins, GA, sister Jackie Reeves of San Antonio, TX, and sister-in-law Cora Evans. She also leaves to cherish a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends that will miss her dearly. Service entrusted to Gregory B.
