Rosa Lee Martin

May 1, 1933 was a joyous day in Atlanta, Georgia. A beautiful baby girl was born to Judge and Lillie Benton. This rosy little one was the fifth child of six given to this union. They named her “Rosie Lee”. However, she later changed it to “Rosa”. She was fondly called “Minnie” which stayed with her for her entire life. “Minnie” met and married Douglas Lee Martin at the tender age of 21. They shared 45 years of marriage before his passing. They were the parents of seven children. She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Lee Martin and her eldest son, Douglas Lee Martin, Jr. “Minnie” grew up in the Fourth Ward community of Atlanta where her parents, other siblings, and friends adored her. She was the light of their world. She made people happy just to be in her company…always joking. She had a glowing smile and a sweet personality that could lift your spirit. She was easy to befriend. “Minnie” was educated through the Atlanta Public School system. There she attended Yonge Street School and David T Howard High School. She later attended Atlanta Area Tech to enhance her cosmetology skills. Minnie was a hard worker and a dedicated mom. She worked laborious jobs to care for her family. Atlanta Stove Works and Georgia Nuts & Bolts were the two companies she spoke about most. Later, she was employed by the State of Georgia, Behavioral Health Department, to assist with the care of children institutionalized for behavior instabilities. She really loved working with the children and acting as a second “grandma” to them. “Rosa” loved Jehovah God and accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. She served diligently in the Field Ministry for many years. Over the years, she was an Auxiliary Pioneer as well as a constant assistant to regular Pioneers and other Auxiliary Pioneers. During special occasions such as the Memorial of Jesus Christ and Circuit Overseer visits, she dedicated her time wherever help was needed. Rosa loved the many sisters and brothers she came to know at the Kingdom Hall and spoke of them often. Before her illness, she would get up before the break of dawn to witness to as many people as possible. Rosa traveled to places like Hawaii, Fiji Islands, and Australia sharing her love for Jehovah with others. Rosa “Minnie” was also preceded in death by her parents and her siblings: Thelma Grier, Horace Benton, Austin Benton, and Frank Benton. Rosa “Minnie” leaves to cherish her memory her baby brother, Judge Benton; her children: Arinthia Rackley(Cleo), Annette Thompson(Roland), Ronald Martin, Debra Somerset(Lewis), Melanie Martin, and Kimberly Lopez(Antonio); her grandchildren: Shelethia, Jamal, Cedric, Chris, Roland, Ronisha, Carla, Angelica, Paul, Brandon, Kimielle, Aaliyah, Nia, Ariana, and Evan.
