Robert Daniel Flanigan Jr.

Robert Daniel “Danny” Flanigan, Jr., 71, passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, while surrounded by his wife and son. Danny was born on April 14, 1949 in Lithonia, GA, and raised in Conyers. After graduating from J.P. Carr High School in 1966, he subsequently obtained degrees from Clark College (CAU) in 1970 and the Emory University Goizueta Business School in 1982. He began his career at Big Five accounting firm Arthur Andersen & Co. prior to being hired by Spelman College in 1970 as Assistant to the Business Manager. He proudly spent fifty years at Spelman working with six of the college’s presidents, one acting president, the Board of Trustees, and a wide range of colleagues beyond the campus. At the time of his passing, he served as Executive Vice President, Chief Investment Officer, and Treasurer. He and his colleagues grew Spelman College’s endowment from $6 million in 1970 to approximately $400 million at present. He contributed to a wide range of professional and community organizations throughout his life. He was an active member of Big Miller Grove Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee and member of the Finance Department. He was also a board member for asset manager Commonfund, The College Board, and numerous private institutions. He met the love of his life, Anne Lois, when they were seven and five years old, respectively. They were married in 1970 and celebrated fifty years of matrimony in December 2020. He is survived by his loving wife, Anne and their son, Robert Johnathan; father, Robert Daniel Flanigan, Sr.; four brothers, Alfred (Jacqueline), Marvin (Sonja), Alvin “Lee” (Sandra), and Brinkley; one sister, Valerie (Lanier) Harper; aunts Annie Benton and Erma Mabry; nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Maggie Lue (Mabry) Flanigan. Our beloved Danny will be truly missed. We will cherish his wisdom, joy for life, loving spirit, and his legacy. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11:00AM Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at Gregory B. Levett & Sons Funeral Home. Attendance is by INVITATION only. The Service will be Live Streamed.
