Mrs. Patricia Elaine May

The sunrise for Patricia Elaine Hunter-May was on February 1, 1951. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Mr. John Henry Hunter and Ruby Lee Wilson-Hunter. The sunset for Patricia was on August 9, 2024. Mrs. May accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of St. James Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Upon moving to Decatur, Georgia, she united with Green Forest Baptist Church. She later joined House of Hope in Decatur, Georgia. She attended English Avenue Elementary School, Samuel Howard Archer High School, and Tennessee State University and was coached by legendary coach Edward S. Temple. She received her master’s degree from Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville, Illinois. In 1969, she became a well-known Tigerbelle. Patricia was married to Joseph Scott May in June of 1974 and moved to East St. Louis, Illinois, where she became a high school teacher and the girls’ head track coach. She moved back to Atlanta in 1985. Patricia was an active member and president of her class at Archer High School, and she was also an active member and vice-president of her Lithonia Neighborhood Association. Patricia was a teacher and track coach at Lithonia High School in DeKalb County and won six county championships. She was also an assistant principal at the high school and later became the principal of Lithonia Middle School. Mrs. May participated in many charitable organizations such as the United Negro College Fund, Mayor’s Masked Ball, and the Diamond Awards. Mrs. May leaves to cherish her precious memories of her life to her husband, Joseph Scott May; sons, Joey May (Sonya), Scott Mikel May, Charles “Chico” May, and Derico Cooper; three siblings, Dr. Shirley Hunter-Murphy, Ms. Loretta Hunter-Browning, and Mr. Vincent Hunter; grandchildren, Jordan May, Xavier May, Natalie Crum, Nathan May, Micah May, Amari May, Derico Cooper, Jr., and Kayla Cooper; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends. Celebration of Life Service for Patricia May will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at 11:00 AM. This service will be recorded and streamed live.
