Rev. Oscar Stokes Jr.

Rev. Oscar Stokes, Jr. was born on August 30, 1938, to Bessie Mae and Oscar Stokes, Sr. in Natchez, Mississippi. As the youngest of their children, he inherited and carried forward a powerful legacy of strength, family, faith, and education. Oscar pursued higher learning at Mississippi Valley State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He continued his studies at Atlanta University, receiving a Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance—further deepening his commitment to uplifting others through education. A lifetime member of the MVSU Alumni Association, Oscar was inducted into the National Alumni Hall of Fame in May 2022, a distinguished honor reflecting his unwavering devotion to learning, service, and academic excellence. A dedicated educator, Oscar began his teaching career in the Mississippi Delta before moving to Jackson, Georgia, and later Griffin, Georgia. He devoted his career to Coordinated Vocational-Academic Education (CVAE), empowering students with practical skills that shaped their futures. His leadership extended into the Griffin-Spalding School System, where he served faithfully as a school board member, championing educational opportunity and excellence for all students. Answering God’s call, Oscar was ordained into the Gospel Ministry in February 1985. He served with humility, conviction, and a heart for people—touching countless lives through his preaching, teaching, and compassionate presence. He served in various capacities at Mt. Zion Baptist Church for more than thirty years and later over 20 years at Greenforest Baptist Church before his passing. He was also a proud member of the NAACP and a faithful supporter of several children’s hospitals. For nearly sixty years, Oscar was a devoted husband to Essimena Williams Stokes—his steadfast partner in life and faith. Together, they raised two children and built a home grounded in love, service, and spiritual strength. Oscar was preceded in death by twelve siblings, each part of the remarkable family that shaped his early life. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Essimena; his children, Jan StokesTingle and Oscar Jameson Stokes (TaShawna); his beloved nephew, whom he lovingly raised from childhood, Lionel Stokes (Brenda); his cherished grandchildren—Jaylen Tingle, Morgan Tingle, Khloe Stokes, and Kai Stokes; three sisters‑in‑law—Rosena Williams, Sarah Williams, and Edwina Williams; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and all whose lives were enriched by knowing him. Rev. Oscar Stokes, Jr. lived a life defined by service, integrity, faith, and love. His legacy stands as a testament to a life well lived—rooted in family, strengthened by faith, committed to education, and carried forward by the generations who proudly follow in his footsteps.
