Ms. Mattie Ruth Simmons

It is with great sorrow that we announce the quiet passing of Mattie Ruth Simmons. She was a woman of boundless energy, intelligence, and heart. Mattie was born on June 13, 1939, in Albion, Michigan, the youngest daughter of Ola Lou and Clarence Wheeler. Her daughters, Rhonda and Kim, were with her at the time of her passing. Mattie’s early years were spent with her parents and an abundance of siblings: Alton, Aubrey, Calvin, Clarence, Daryl, Dorothy, Harvey, Huey, and Marilyn. There are too many tales and adventures to list here, but they all enjoyed a rich and loving childhood. After graduating from Albion High School, Mattie moved to Minneapolis. In addition to being a nurturing and involved mother and wife, she always enriched herself by learning new things; she loved reading and taking part in activities such as bowling, long walks, swimming, and other physical pursuits. After earning her college degree from Delaware Valley College, she had a successful career in accounting and business management, working for many years at Aydin. Mattie loved music, reading, long walks, and any time spent near water, especially the ocean. Her most extraordinary talent was finding joy in small things. She was very social and always enjoyed time with family, friends, and meeting new people. She loved to travel, possessing a keen mind and a caring heart full of both justice and compassion. Small children and animals held a special place in her orbit. She always had time to speak with anyone and never lost curiosity in the people she would meet in stores, on walks, or on trips. She especially loved the people and food of Italy. Her daughter Roxanne; parents, Clarence and Ola Lou Wheeler; and siblings, Aubrey, Calvin, Clarence Jr., Dorothy, Huey, and Marilyn preceded her in death. Mattie is survived by her daughters, Kim and Rhonda; her brothers, Alton, Darryl, and Harvey; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Her life was a rich and diverse tapestry with much love and many highlights, and she was grateful for it. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, August 8th, 2026 at 11 AM St. James Community Church, 3000 Webb Bridge Road, Alpharetta, GA 30009. Please express your condolences here on our website.
