Ms. Mary T. Hunter

Celebration of Life and Legacy of Mary T. Hunter Mary T. Hunter was born September 28, 1932, in Jackson, (Butts County), Georgia to James and Eliza Lawson, and she carried a remarkable spirit throughout her life, independent, steadfast in her convictions, and never afraid to stand firmly in what she believed. She graduated from Henderson High School in 1948, where she was a star basketball player, and went on to attend Hughes Spaulding School of Nursing before beginning a 32-year career at the Veterans Administration Hospital and later volunteering with the Atlanta Regional Commission. She married Robert L. Hunter in 1957. Affectionately known as Mary T., she carried a warmth that made everyone feel welcome, whether family, lifelong friend, guest, or someone she had just met. Among the greatest joys of Mary T.’s life were her three daughters, Verlez, Cynthia, and Robin, “her girls,” as she lovingly called them. After moving to Atlanta, Mary T. lived with James and Nellie Vance, and Nellie, affectionately known as Nannie, helped keep watch over “her girls” during their formative years, allowing Mary T. to work and build a life for her family. She understood the value of education and opportunity and was determined that her girls would have every chance to pursue both. She treasured their time together shopping, traveling, sharing meals, and these ordinary events became extraordinary memories. Mary T. was preceded in death by her siblings Edward Price, Arvella Taylor, June Lawson, Cecil Lawson, Clifford Lawson, and Lewis Lawson. She leaves to cherish her memory her three daughters, Verlez Ward (Alonzo), Cynthia Hunter (Ray), and Robin Anthony (Tyshawn); her sister, Virginia Lawson; her brothers, Winston Lawson (Juanita), Charles Lawson (Jackie), and Nathaniel Lawson (Cheryl); and her many beloved, as Mary T. would surely have said, “favorite”, nieces and nephews. She also leaves her beloved “fur grand-dog,” Bailey. Most of all, Mary T. leaves a legacy of love. Celebration of Life Graveside Service will be held on Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, 2275 Joseph E. Boone Blvd. NE, Atlanta, GA 30314. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 from 12:00 PM-7:00 PM with family hours from 5pm-7pm at Gregory B.
