Mary Elder

Mary had a special love for children and always stepped in to fill a void when needed. She devoted years of her life taking care of others and being a mother to the motherless. She was the glue that held family generations together. She will truly be missed and loved forever. Our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend transitioned Monday, January 30, 2017 at Tranquility of Cobb Hospice at the age of 76 years old. She was the embodiment of strength and courage during her bout with Breast Cancer in 2014 and Gallbladder Cancer 2016. Even though she endured some tough days, she still thought of others before self. A Time to be Born: Mary Lois Elder born November 23, 1940 in Rutledge, Georgia to the late Mr. and Mrs. Willie Lee Elder (Addie). She was the youngest of three siblings —a brother Willie Lee Elder, Jr. and sister Willie Nell Elder. A Time to Learn: Mary received her education in Atlanta Public School System and graduated Atlanta Metropolitan College. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse at Wesley Woods for 24 years until retiring. A Time to Live: Mary enjoyed hosting family gatherings, cooking and traveling. She was a free spirit and the life of the party. Mary was preceded in death by son Jeffery Lenard Cherry, son-in-law Dwayne McGruder, Sr., grand niece Christina Marla Elder, great grand nephew Desmond Elder, mother Addie Lou Elder, father Willie Lee Elder, sister Willie Nell Elder and brother Willie Lee Elder. A Time To Mourn: She leaves to cherish memories, daughter Jennifer McGruder, son Mr. and Mrs. Eric Elder (Veronica); grandchildren Donte Cherry, Demeon Price, Eddie Demons, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Darnell Johnson (Chelsea) Brittany Demons, Dwayne McGruder, Jr., Sydney McGruder; great-grandchildren Emanda Demons, Jamea Johnson, Darnell Johnson, Jr., Eddie Demons III and Nyhla Johnson; niece Mr. and Mrs. Albert Jackson (Antionette); great niece Tina Elder; great nephew Antonio Elder; Special Friend Joe Nathan Mitchell and a host of cousins, great great nieces, other relatives and friends.
