Mary Nell Catalan

With profound sadness and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the passing of Mary Nell Chassion Catalan, who entered into eternal rest on June 3, 2026, at Northside Hospital–Gwinnett in Lawrenceville, Georgia, following a lengthy illness. She was 83 years old. Born on February 15, 1943, in New Iberia, Louisiana, Mary was the beloved second-born child of Esther and Eva Broussard Chassion. She was raised in a close-knit family rooted in faith, hard work, and love. She graduated from Henderson High School in 1960 and continued her education at Southwest Louisiana Institute, now known as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Mary dedicated twenty years of service to Exxon USA, where she built a respected career through her diligence, professionalism, and commitment to excellence. Following her retirement, she relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where she began a successful second career in retail management. Through her leadership, warm personality, and strong work ethic, she earned the admiration and respect of colleagues, employees, and customers alike. For many years, Mary made her home with her beloved brother, Raymond Chassion, whose companionship, support, and devotion meant the world to her. The bond they shared was one of love, loyalty, and unwavering commitment. As her health began to decline, Mary moved into the home of her eldest daughter, Tina, and son-in-law, Rene, who lovingly opened their hearts and home to her. Their extraordinary care, patience, and selfless sacrifices allowed Mary to spend her final years surrounded by comfort, dignity, and unconditional love. Through countless doctor visits, long days, sleepless nights, and the daily challenges of caregiving, Tina and Rene demonstrated a level of devotion that can only be described as a true labor of love. Their kindness and steadfast support provided Mary not only exceptional care but also the peace and reassurance of knowing she was deeply cherished every day. While Mary found success in her professional life, her greatest accomplishment was the love she shared with her family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend whose love knew no bounds. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, encouragement, and unwavering support. She possessed a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved. Throughout her life, Mary answered to many names, each carrying its own special meaning and reflecting the many roles she embraced. To her daughters, she was Mom and Mama, the steady source of love, wisdom, encouragement, and strength that guided them throughout their lives. Her grandchildren affectionately knew her as Grandma and Granny, titles she treasured deeply and wore with immense pride. To friends and extended family, she was known as Mary Nell or simply Mary, names synonymous with kindness, grace, and friendship. Yet among all the names she carried, perhaps none suited her more perfectly than “The Duchess.” Bestowed upon her by those who loved her most, the nickname reflected her dignity, confidence, strong spirit, and unmistakable presence. Whether offering advice, sharing a laugh, gathering with family, or cheering on her beloved Saints, The Duchess had a way of making every moment memorable. No matter what she was called, each name represented the same remarkable woman whose love, faith, and devotion left an enduring imprint on the hearts of all who knew her. Mary was a gifted writer who found joy in expressing herself through poetry and the written word. She was an avid reader who appreciated a good book and enjoyed spending quiet moments immersed in stories and learning. She loved watching game shows, working puzzles, and cheering on her favorite sports teams. A passionate sports fan, she rarely missed an opportunity to watch a game, especially when her beloved New Orleans Saints were playing. In her healthier years, she also enjoyed visiting casinos, where she relished the excitement and fellowship of family and friends. Above all, Mary treasured time spent with her family, creating memories that will be cherished for generations to come. One of Mary's greatest blessings in life was the gift of enduring friendship. She remained deeply connected to lifelong friends whose love and loyalty never wavered through the years. Even as distance and illness changed many aspects of her life, Julia “Chick” Roy, Mary Helen Broussard, and Mona Faye Thomas continued to call, check on her, share stories, offer encouragement, and remind her that true friendship knows no boundaries of time or circumstance. Their faithful presence, thoughtful conversations, and genuine concern brought Mary comfort, joy, and a treasured connection to the people and memories she held dear throughout her life. Most importantly, Mary loved the Lord. Her faith was the foundation upon which she built her life and sustained her through both triumphs and challenges. She lived with grace, compassion, and a servant's heart, leaving a lasting example of faith, resilience, and love for all who knew her. She found strength in prayer, comfort in God's promises, and peace in knowing that His love would carry her through every season of life. She leaves to cherish her precious memory her three loving daughters: Tina Catalan Brown and husband, Rene Brown, of Atlanta, Georgia; Lisa Catalan Bosset and husband, Stephen Bosset, of Odenton, Maryland; and Sonya Catalan Anderson of Scott, Louisiana. She is also survived by her devoted brother, Raymond J. Chassion of Atlanta, Georgia; eight beloved grandchildren, Madison Brown, Taylor Bosset, Brice Brown, Bailey Brown, Blair Anderson, Colby Bosset, Logan Anderson, and Grant Anderson; two treasured great-grandchildren, Ariana Joelle Aristy and Frankie Dylin Baker; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love and friendship. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Esther and Eva Broussard Chassion; her brother, John Allen Chassion; her beloved best friend, Doris Senegal, whose friendship spanned a lifetime of cherished memories, laughter, and unwavering companionship; and her former son-in-law, Reolan Patrick Anderson, Jr
