Luther Clarence Patton??s ObituaryLuther Patton was the oldest of seven children, born to Houston and Gracie Patton. Although only a teenager when his father died, along with his mother, Luther became the backbone of the family. He supported his mother in every way to ensure each of his younger siblings attained their undergraduate degrees.After graduating high school, Luther enlisted in the armed services. He served two tours of duty in World War II. Always supportive of his family, he re-enlisted for the second tour so that his sisters could complete their college education. After his Army tour, he went back to school on the G. I. Bill and graduated from Tougaloo College with a Bachelor??s Degree. He continued his education at the University of Chicago where he earned his Master??s Degree in Social Work.He was a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the Veterans of Foreign wars.Luther began his professional career as a social worker for the state of Illinois. He worked at the state level for several years. He later decided to move to the federal level where he continued his profession in the field of social work.As a form of relaxation, Luther enjoyed fishing with his son, nephews, nieces, family, and friends. Shortly after Luther and his wife moved to Atlanta, his son surprised him with his own boat, not an easy task to keep secret, but his son, Luther Charles, with the help of other relatives was successful in keeping it a surprise. Luther also enjoyed playing golf with family and friends. His love of golf spanned over 50 years. Luther also enjoyed tournaments where he pushed himself to improve his game. He was a classic handyman. Luther was always using his creative talents to improve life for his family.Furthermore, Luther appreciated the intrinsic joy of serving his community. He gladly served as a Scoutmaster in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) in Chicago impacting the lives of many including his son and grandson. Because of his exposure to scouting, his son developed a love for engineering and made it into a career. Additionally, his grandson earned his Eagle Scout Badge. In addition to community service, Luther served in several church capacities at Cascade United Methodist Church, including the Board of Trustees during the move to the church??s current location.He was also a member of the Celebration of Life Ministry and the Older Adults-Torchbearers Ministry.Luther is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Dorothy, a son Luther Charles (Gayla), Tempe, AZ, grandson, Luther III, Atlanta, GA, and granddaughter, Amy, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, AZ.Sisters: Olivia Johnson (Eddie, Hon.), Chicago, ILEssie Brown (Joseph), San Jose, CAElla Marcus (George), Fresno, CAHe was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Page, Greenville,MSBrothers: Ernest (Carolyn), Clovis, CA Houston, Hon. (Johnnie), Jackson, MSBrothers-in-law: Dr. Mathew Page, Greenville, MS Rayburne Lawrence (Carolyn), Chicago, ILSisters-in-law: Lillian Thomas, Pasadena, CA Rubielee Addison, Clemson, S. C.and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
