Leon Thomas

Elder Leon Thomas was born on December 20, 1948, in Greensboro, Georgia to the late Oscar and Nona Mae Thomas, who preceded him in death. He attended school in Green County, Georgia. Leon also attended Job Corp in Seattle, Washington where he received his high school diploma in 1967. After attending Job Corp, he relocated to Murfreesboro, Tennessee with his sister. Leon later relocated to Chicago, Illinois where he began his adult life. Leon worked hard for many years at Campus Green as a maintenance specialist. Leon gave his life to God in 1972 at People’s Church of God in Christ under the late William Eaddy Sr. where he was a faithful member for many years. After retiring from Campus Green in 1989 he returned to his home, in Decatur, Georgia. Leon started a second career with Dekalb County schools where he worked for 24 years as a Plant Engineer at Stone Mountain Middle school. He joined Kelly Lake Church of God in Christ in 1989 under the leadership of Bishop Norman Harper and was a faithful member for 34 years. Leon served as the senior elder, a member of the finance committee, vice president of the men’s fellowship, a tribal leader, and a member of the men’s choir. During his time at Kelly Lake, he met the love of his life, Alicia Thomas. Alicia and Leon were joined in holy matrimony by his son Elder Merrick Thomas (Happy) on February 20, 2010. They lived a happy life together for 13 years. Leon Thomas became a lover of traveling, he was a master gardener, an entrepreneur and started his handyman service. He loved playing video games and watching movies and his favorite show, Andy Griffin. Leon was known for his quick whit and sense of humor. Some of his favorite quotes include. “you don’t know” , I ain’t going to be able to do it”, “what the devil” , you piece of junk”. Leon Thomas was loved and cherished by many people. He was a pleasure to be around. All people would say he had a heart of gold. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He will be dearly missed by all. Leon leaves to cherish the memory of his loving wife, Alicia Thomas, and his children Ronald Thomas, Merrick Thomas(Yvette), Angela Thomas, Semuriel Gilmore (Devoris), Nerville Cox (Rolanda), Lasharon Cox, Stacy Cox, Angueria Jones Jr., Ahmad Jones; sisters and brothers, Jean Stephens (Shelly), Mini Alexander(Lester), Dorothy Brown (Army), Linda Woodley, Charles Thomas (Liz), Jesse Thomas, and 24 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, friends, and the entire Kelly Lake COGIC family. He is preceded in death by James Thomas, Anna Mae Thomas, Susie Chester, Willie Thomas, Bobby Thomas, Howard Thomas
