Lavada Veal

Obituary Mrs. Lavada Morton Veal, was born the yougest of two daughters on March 31, 1938 in Walnut Grove Georgia, to the late Mrs Rosa Thompson and Mr. Henry Morton. She transitioned Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Mrs. Veal was affectionately known as "Vada" in her professional and personal life. She married Jonas Harry Veal after graduating in 1956 from David T. Howard High School in Atlanta. The union was blessed with four children. Vada worked in hospitals, hotels and restaurants before advancing to an institutional dietary specialist after receiving her dietician cetification from the University of Georgia. Her career included Georgia Department of Corrections, where she was honored by then Governor Jimmy Carter for food service excellence. Previously, she was widely known for her "kosher" soul food at Emory University's Hillel House. Vada launched a successful catering company, while maintaining a full-time job as a single mother of four. She retired from McClendon Elementary School dietary staff with a national award for her signature rolls. In retirement, Vada assumed caregiving duties for her mother and survived colon cancer. A master quilter and avid reader, she enjoyed gardening, swimming and socializing at the East Lake YMCA until she was severely injured in a head-on collision by a texting Uber driver in 2017. She struggled to return to normalcy. Vada was proceeded in death by her husband, Jonas Harry Veal and leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Warren Keith Veal of Decatur, Georgia, three daughters: Retired Airforce Master Sargent Sharon Veal of Stone Mountain, Ms. Rhonda Veal of Lithonia, Georgia, and Dr. Tracey Veal Booker (spouse Retired Navy Captain Allen Booker) of Pasadena, California; three grandchildren Courtney (spouse Jason) Wilson of Dunwoody, Georgia: Tarell (spouse Shamora) Kyles of Stone Mountain, Georgia; and Tristan Kyles of Vail, Arizona: and four great grandchildren, Ava and Ace Wilson of Dunwoody, Georgia; Jayden Kyles of Stone Mountain, Georgia; Syrus Kyles of Vail Arizona and countless relatives and friends Livestream; https://vimeo.com/event/2870785
