Laura Hughes

Laura Hughes, born on October 19, 1938, in Evanston, IL, graced this world as the eldest of Charles and Hortense Harris's ten children. Her journey through life was marked by dedication, love, and service. After graduating from high school in Evanston, Laura pursued her passion for nursing, earning her LPN. She found joy in working in retail sales, a career that allowed her to connect with people and brighten their days. Beyond her professional life, Laura’s heart blossomed in her garden, a sanctuary of peace and relaxation. She cherished reading, crafting, and most importantly, spending precious moments with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. A devoted member of Springfield Baptist Church, Laura's faith was a cornerstone of her life. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Laura transitioned from this life on November 27, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love. Her memory will forever be cherished by her beloved husband of 52 years, LeRoy Hughes; her children, Janis Grier (husband Stanley), Celeste Tatum, James Lawrence (wife Harriet), and Laurie Lewis (husband Joe); her siblings, Louella DuBose, Charles Harris (wife Patti), Spencer Harris (wife Paulette), Hortense Harris, Lolita Wilson, Lucinda Bowdry, Charlene Harris, and Charlotte Sanchez; her twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Hortense and Charles Harris, and her sister Lorraine Wright. Laura's life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and family. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered in our hearts. May she rest in the eternal peace and light of God's love Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 12-8PM at our Rockdale Chapel.
