Laura May Dubose

Laura was born April 25, 1930, in Poplar Springs, Alabama. She was the fifth child of Furlandus and Effie Lee Johnson (both deceased). She, along with seven sisters, were raised by a single father. In her adult life she was blessed with a stepmother, Martha Ball (deceased). Her siblings included: Katherine Latham (deceased), Mable Temple (deceased), Edna Manning (deceased), Annie Lee Alexander (deceased), Willie Mae Johnson (deceased), Ernestine Johnson (deceased), and Ethelrine Moulton (surviving sibling). She also had a brother, Jerry Ball (deceased). A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends were a part of her life as well. Laura married Leonard Dubose (deceased). They shared thirty years of life together. They both shared common goals of educating children. They had one daughter, Rhonda Elaine Ward, and a sonin-law, William Earl Ward. The grandchildren are Shalita and Brandon Ward and two great-grandchildren, Micah, and Brandon Emmett Ward. Laura discovered her passion early in life and that was to become an educator. She taught school for thirty-seven years after following in the footsteps of her stepmother and her Aunt Bobbie (we called Mo). Laura graduated with a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education from Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with additional studies at Alabama State University, Montgomery, Alabama, and graduate studies at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. She taught at various schools in Pickens County, Alabama, during her teaching tenue. She was an active member of Miles Chapel C.M.E. Church, Reform, Alabama. She was also an active member of the Lebanon Association Community Bible Study group, as well as a member of The Eastern Star Lardonia Chapter 422, Reform, Alabama. Once she moved to Georgia, she attended the Antioch A.M.E. Church, Stone Mountain, Georgia, and attended the Royal Adult Day Services (specialty for those with Dementia and Alzheimer). Educational memberships included: The National Education Association and the Alabama Teachers Retirement System organization, Pickens County, Alabama, chapter. Volunteer activities included: tutoring and mentoring young children, teaching Bible Study and Sunday School at Miles Chapel C.M.E. Church and assisting with school events. Laura was grateful and always remembered her family's support and she realized that it is important to pay it forward. Her greatest gift was being supportive and encouraging and she believed in living a life of service to family and others. Services entrusted to Gregory B.
