James Henry Cooper

The life of this simple, yet extraordinary man, James Henry Cooper, began on October 7, 1929, in the city of Covington, Georgia. His parents were the late Walter and Annie Cooper. He departed this earthly life on July 15, 2015. James, better known as J.H., graduated from the Herring Street High School in Decatur, Georgia and immediately joined the U.S. Army. He continued his education at Morris Brown College. He fell in love with Vera Yvonne Bolden; they were soon united in marriage as one. To this union four children were born: Anita, Alvin, and Gary. Another son, Cedric, preceded his father in death. J.H.(James) and Vera were members of St. Paul AME Church in Stone Mountain, Georgia, where he served on the Stewards Board. James was faithful, dedicated, and committed to his duties as an officer, and to the Lord. In the early 1950’s, they united with the Antioch AME Church family where James continued his service and dedication. There he loved singing in the male chorus. He has worked at the East Lake Country Club; and later, he was employed most of his life at Emory Healthcare. His wife has said, “There’s no better husband or father on this earth than James.” The children were so close to their dad that they could often be seen either playing board games with him or watching television, especially sports or “Jeopardy.” He loved to hear his daughter, Anita, play various selections on the piano and would request favorites to listen to at special times. James was an avid and lover of the Hawks, Braves, and Falcons. He could sit in his recliner and watch sports all day. James and Vera joined the Herring Street-Trinity Travel Club, in which they immensely enjoyed participating, traveling to many points of interest in the country. James has left to mourn and celebrate his kind spirit and beautiful life, a loving wife, Vera Yvonne Cooper, one daughter, Mrs. Anita Jo LaVal (Nathan); two sons, Alvin Troy and Gary Wayne Cooper, three grandchildren, Nathan Scott LaVal, Demetrice Christopher, and Iesha Baker, in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Halliman (Dorothy), Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bolden(Gayle), Mrs. Ella Mae Adams, and Mr. Albert Bolden and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. We love you, James, but God loves you best. Funeral Services for Mr. James Cooper will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Antioch A.M.E. Church, 765 S. Hairston Rd., Stone Mountain, GA 30088. Reverend Stafford J. Wicker, Senior Pastor. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the church at 10:30AM.
