Ione Charles

Ione (Pierson) Charles, born on Sunday, July 23, 1933, made her transition from this life on Sunday, February 04, 2024. Ione was born in Hugo, Oklahoma as the eighth child of twelve to Oscar & Omie Pierson. All of them has preceded her in death except the twelfth sibling, (sister) Ruth Ann Block of Independence, Missouri. She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, Hugo, Oklahoma. She was a guard on the basketball team After graduation, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri to be with her siblings. While there, she had her only child (daughter), Ethel Emery. Later, she moved to Mesa, Arizona, to be a caregiver for her brother’s wife. During her stay in Arizona, she united with Curtis Charles. His construction jobs took them to Louisiana and Texas for several years. They moved to Pontiac, Michigan. They became members of Wings of Truth Gospel Church in Highland Park, Michigan. Their recreational hobby was fishing on their boat. The neighborhood always looked forward to fish Fry. She retired from General Motors to be her husband’s caregiver. After his passing, she became a member of Welcome Baptist Church in Pontiac, Michigan. She was a member of the Mother Board. She joined the Golden Opportunity Club (Bowens Senior Center). They traveled on numerous trips. Whenever the announcement was, “We are going to” _____”, she was ready! She was a member of the family bowling team. She played senior softball and volleyball. She participated in several city tournaments. She moved to Lawrenceville, GA to live with her daughter. When she heard the name “Bowens” she knew she was in the right place. She joined Friendship Baptist Church attending Sunday School and bible study. She also participated with Friendship in Fellowship bowling league. During her illness, technology allowed her to stay connected to the church. Besides her sister and daughter, she leaves to cherish her memory one grandson, Harold Robert Emery II (Jobina) of Garland, Texas and one granddaughter, Shalonda -Emery Johnson (Thomas) of Ontario, California. She leaves three great-grandsons, Da’Von Tyree Webb, Curtis Charles Emery, and De‘Marcus Willonte’ Webb. She was a special mom to Gwendolyn Cobb, grandmother (Oma) to Judith Lindsey (Ray) and David Rollins, all of Pell City, Alabama. She has three honorary great-granddaughters, Ashley Elm, Michala-Elm Smith, and Jahzara Elm. A blessing that it balances out with the great-grandsons. But, back to sons, 3 great-great grandsons, Langston, Preston and A.J. She has two attentive nieces, Gloria Brown of Independence, Missouri and Veronica Charles of Conyers, GA, along with a host of other nieces and nephews. A special “THANKS” to her friend and confidant, Thelma Williams and “servant”, Rosena Heyward. Celebration of Life (Memorial Services) will be held on Saturday, March 02, 2024, 11:00AM at Friendship Baptist Church 3375 Church Street Duluth, GA 30096. Services are entrusted to Gregory B. Levett & Sons Funeral Home 914 Scenic Hwy Lawrenceville, GA 30045.
