Mr. Howard Lee Sims

Howard Lee (Red) Sims age 73 of Lithonia, Georgia passed away on June 3, 2026, at Piedmont Rockwell Hospital, surrounded by family and friends. He was born on March 10, 1953, to the late Bessie Ruth Sims and Theordore Sims in Athens, Georgia. Howard attended Westbroad Elementary School in Athens, Georgia. Also, he attended Howard High in Atlanta, Georgia Affectionately known as “Red,” he was a lifelong automotive enthusiast with a deep passion for engines, speed, and craftsmanship. In his younger years, Red enjoyed racing both cars and motorcycles, embracing the thrill of competition and the camaraderie of the racing community. His love for automobiles eventually became his profession as the owner of various automotive repair shops, where he earned a reputation for his mechanical expertise, straightforward honesty, and dedication to his customers. Red was especially skilled at rebuilding motors, a craft he mastered through years of experience, patience, and hard work. There was little that could be brought into his shop that he could not diagnose, repair, or restore. Even at 73 years old, he never lost his appreciation for the machines he loved. Those who knew Red will fondly remember not only his talent but also his unmistakable sense of humor. When a customer arrived with a vehicle in particularly rough condition, he would often grin and say, “Why did you bring that raggedy piece of boo-boo to me?”—usually followed by a laugh and a willingness to help get it running again. Whether he was working in the shop, talking about racing, or sharing his knowledge with family, friends, and customers, Red’s passion for automobiles remained a defining part of who he was. His legacy of hard work, craftsmanship, and love for all things mechanical will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind his beloved son, Dianti Sims, and daughter Keisha Jones who will forever cherish his memory The last living siblings one sister Emmel Gunn and one brother Lovet Sims and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and special friend Danala Thomas. Through the pain of his loss is overwhelming, we find solace in memories he left behind. Howard spirit will live on in our hearts.
