OBITUARY Mrs. Florence Davis Jernigan She was a giant of a woman, standing erect at less than five feet tall, in high heels, with beautiful skin as smooth as silk. Yes, she was a giant of a woman with a big voice that commanded attention when she spoke. She was unapologetic in her love for her family and not afraid to speak her mind whether asked or not. This beautiful giant of a woman was born on November 1, 1929 in Eufaula, Alabama. She transitioned on March 25, 2021 in Dacula, Georgia. She was ninety-one years young. She lived a full and beautiful life. Surely, her best life. Florence was the youngest of three sisters. The eldest sister, Lois Childs preceded her in death. The family moved to Eufaula, Alabama from Clay County, Georgia prior to Florence’s birth. Her mother, Mrs. Annie M. Davis passed away when Florence was a baby. She was reared primarily by her maternal grandparents: Handy and Ida Liza Jane Davis. The Davis family owned a corner store where all members of the family worked. The family lived on and by Christian values. Florence spent her formative years in the family Church, Zion Baptist Church where she was an active member during her youth. Serving on the Usher Board as this was the position that all members of the family held at one time. An avid walker until crippling arthritis hindered her movement. She loved sports especially wresting and later football where she became the biggest Falcons fan yet. She looked forward to Sunday afternoons with her grandson where they drank coffee and watched the Falcons. She was sure to dress in one of her Falcons jerseys. She was a game show enthusiast and the biggest Family Feud Fan. As a matter of fact, she was invited to three of Steve Harvey’s live tapings. This giant of a woman was called by many names including: Family encyclopedia (A sharp memory for all type details and everybody’s birthday), Florence, Ms. Florence, Short-stuff, Auntie, Aunt Florence, Diva (as she enjoyed getting fully dressed every day), Ms. Jernigan, My Momma, Mommy. However, her favorite title, by far was, Granny. She loved her grandson, unconditionally. She relocated to Georgia, to live with her daughter in 2010. While always insisting that she was only visiting and not living permanently in Georgia, she did develop a nice Bingo Social Group. The eight to ten ladies gathered monthly to play Bingo and win prizes. She enjoyed winning and was not very happy when she did not leave with prizes. She leaves to cherish many wonderful memories: Daughter, Lois C. Richardson, Ph.D. (Georgia); Grandson, Johnny D. Richardson, MBA (Georgia); Sister, Mrs. Annie Will Owens (Alabama); Nieces, Mrs. Bernice Anthony (Alabama), Mrs. Rosie Alice Walker (Georgia); Nephew, Mr. Leroy Dennard, Jr (Georgia)., Stepson, Mr. Alfred A. Cummings (Kathleen) (Pennsylvania) and a host of great nephews, nieces, cousins, “other children”, and friends. Her husband, Mr. Walter Jernigan preceded her in death.
