Eugene Tudor Shields

Eugene T. Shields ("Gene"), 80, of Decatur, Georgia, was born to Johnnie and Tweetie Mae Shields in Wrens, Georgia. Throughout his life, Gene was known for his strong work ethic, generous heart, and willingness to help others. He was a man of integrity, determination, and many talents whose love for his family and friends was evident in all that he did. Gene began his career working at a steel plant before joining his brother, Johnnie, in construction. He later held several other jobs before discovering his true passion for truck driving in 1972. In 1974, he proudly purchased his first truck, followed by a second in 1978. He took great pride in his work and built a reputation as someone who could always be counted on. Anyone who knew Gene would tell you he was a hardworking man with the ability to fix, build, or figure out just about anything. On December 1, 1967, Gene married Geraldine ("Gerri"), the love of his life. Together they built a life rooted in love, faith, and family as they raised five children. In 1984, Gene dedicated his life to Jehovah through baptism as one of Jehovah's Witnesses, a decision that strengthened his faith and guided him throughout the rest of his life. After 20 years on the road, Gene returned to his passion for construction and founded Shields Kitchen and Baths in 1994. Through his business, he transformed countless homes with his craftsmanship while building lasting friendships with those he served. Whether he was remodeling a kitchen, repairing a home, or lending a helping hand, Gene found joy in using his talents to make a difference in the lives of others. Gene peacefully passed away on July 14, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie and Tweetie Mae Shields; his brothers, James and Harvey; his sisters, Alma and Evelyn; and his beloved daughters, Sonja, Pam, and Lashawn. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Gene is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Gerri; his daughters, Debbie (John) and Theresa (Henry); his son, Nicholas (Jennifer); his grandsons, Jonathan and Cameron; his brothers, Johnnie (Willie Dean), Calvin, Bernie (Alice), and Wallace (Deborah); and his sister, Minnie. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, dear friends, and all who were blessed to know him. Gene's life was a testament to the value of hard work, faith, perseverance, and unconditional love. His steady presence, quiet strength, and caring spirit will be deeply missed, but his memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him. As we remember Gene, we celebrate a life well lived and find comfort in the hope of seeing him again one day.
