Ethel Jones passed away on October 19, 2019. Celebration of Life Services will be held Saturday November 2, 2019 at County Line UMC 4031 Old River Rd. Ellenwood, GA 30294. Ethel Mae Jones made her life’s debut on April 4, 1926 when she was welcomed into the family circle. She was the third child born to the late Eva Mae Fletcher (Scroggins) Simmons and Joseph Scroggins; and was raised by her devoted stepfather, the late Benjamin Simmons in Atlanta, Georgia. Ethel attended the Atlanta Public School System and concluded her education at David T. Howard High School. To enhance her education, she became an avid reader, spent many afternoons listening to her favorite music selections and mastering crossword and word search puzzles. At an early age, Ethel Mae joined Allen Temple A.M.E. Church in Atlanta, GA. She began her professional occupation as an upholsterer working with Rev. A.M. Bridges, who introduced her to Ralph Thomas Jones, Sr. who she married in June of 1954. Ethel continued her professional career working at Haverty’s Furniture, Alexander Memorial Presbyterian Church, Meadowview Elementary School and Alpine and Glen Hollow Apartments. She retired from Glen Hollow Apartments in 1991. Ethel was a Worthy Matron of the Masonic Order of the Eastern Star for over 50 years and a faithful mentor over the Junior Ushers Board at County Line United Methodist Church for over 30 years. In 2005, Ethel Mae relocated to Falls Church, VA., where she resided for fourteen years with her youngest son, Ralph Thomas Jones, Jr. She joined and regularly attended Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and was an active member of the Shining Star Club, Golden Gems, Ushers Board and engaged in other church activities until her health began to fail. Preceding her in death was her devoted husband, Ralph Thomas Jones, Sr., two brothers: Joseph Scroggins, Jr. and Benjamin Simmons, Jr.; five sisters: Ellen Scroggins, Anne Scroggins Hines, Margaret Simmons, Louise Simmons Scott, and Beatrice Simmons Dukes. Ethel Mae leaves to cherish her memory, two sons, Thomas Anthony Jones (Georcie) of Snellville, Georgia and Ralph Thomas Jones, Jr. of Falls Church, Virginia; Siblings: Marilyn Simmons of Acworth, Georgia, Brenda Simmons Shirley of Atlanta, Georgia, Linda Simmons Blash of Lithonia, Georgia, Faith Simmons Johnson of Cedar Hills, Texas, and James Simmons of Moreno Valley, California; granddaughters, Gretchen (Andrae) Torbert of Lithonia, Georgia, and Mindy Jones of Stone Mountain, Georgia; two sisters-in-law: Mattie Jones of Snellville, Georgia and Susie Drayton of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; a very close friend: Amanda Brown of Annandale, Virginia; three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.
