Erma Mae Norris

Mrs. Erma Mae Sinclair Norris, daughter of the late James Arthur Sinclair, Sr. and Katie Bell Sinclair was born on December 19, 1939 in Lumberton, NC. She departed this earthly life to eternal rest on April 21, 2020 in Grayson, GA. Erma graduated from J.H. Haywood High School in Lumberton, NC in 1957. Then attended North Carolina Central University to obtain her Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics in 1961. While attending NCCU, she was active in the civil rights movement and participated in sit-ins and peaceful protests. Her life’s passion was helping those in need. She spent 31 years working as a social worker for the District of Columbia Department of Health and Human Services. After retirement in 1995, she served as the Director of the SHABACH! Food and Clothing Pantry at First Baptist Church of Glenarden, Maryland. In addition, she served on the Board of Directors of SHABACH! Ministries, Inc., the parent organization of the non-profit organization established by FBCG. At an early age, Erma confessed Christ as the Lord of her life at Pentecostal United Holy Church in Lumberton, NC. In April 1987, Erma joined First Baptist Church of Glenarden, MD. There she served in the Hospitality Ministry, Card Ministry, Sisters in Discipleship and the Senior Choir. After moving to Georgia in 2009, she joined Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Lawrenceville, GA where she was a member of the Missionary Ministry, Golden Seniors Ministry, and the Joseph Clothing Ministry. She was also an active member of the Red Hat Society. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 34 years Henry L. Norris, brother James Arthur Sinclair Jr. and sister Leola Nunn. Erma leaves to continue her legacy: son Reginald Norris and wife Demetria Norris of Lanham, MD; daughter Sabrina Miller and husband Daniel Miller, Jr. of Snellville, GA, and daughter Dr. Chelita Kelley and husband Marvin Kelley, Jr. of Charlotte, NC. Her beloved sister Janice Sinclair of Grayson, GA, and brother Elton Sinclair and Phyllis Sinclair of Lumberton NC. Step-daughter Lorraine Thomas-Prysock and son Kalif Prysock of Germantown, MD and god-daughter Patty Finger of Maiden, NC. Her cherished grandchildren; grandsons Daniel Henry Miller III, Nikolas James Williams, Mason Elijah Kelley and Miles Edward Kelley; and her one and only granddaughter Taylor Brianna Miller. Amongst a host of adopted sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, cousins; and many relatives, loved ones and friends. Erma’s favorite scripture by which she led her life, imparted to her children and grandchildren, and encouraged all of those around her was Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct your paths”.
