Elwood J. Moore

Elwood James Moore was born October 14, 1949 in Phenix City, Alabama. He was the third child of six born to the late James Moore and the late Katie Bertha Perry Moore. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Phenix City, Alabama. Mr. Moore was united in Holy Matrimony to Kathleen Reger Moore of Buffalo, New York on August 30, 2001. He had two children, Shannan Marie Moore (1978) and Benjamin James Moore (1979). Mr. Moore was a friendly, giving and loving man who lived life to the fullest. He loved his family and loved the Lord. Elwood Moore was a family man. He always put his family first. He loved his wife, children, siblings, nieces/nephews, and others. His willingness to look out for and protect his loved ones was apparent each day of his life. He was someone everyone could ALWAYS depend on. Mr. Moore served his country in the Army Reserves. We truly thank him for his service. Elwood Moore retired from the Dekalb County School System after serving many years as an Educational Leader which included time as a principal, teacher and coach among other positions. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, traveling and dancing. He LOVED to dance in his later years! Elwood was also a true outdoorsman. He was a peace-loving man who did not let trivial matters get to him. He knew how to keep things in perspective. He never asked for much, but gave much. He did not care much about what others thought of him; he marched to the beat of his own drum which served him well in many regards. Elwood Moore attended South Girard High School where he played on the Bulldogs Football Team as a center and linebacker. He was a member of the Class of 1967. Elwood was accepted to Alabama State College (University) on a football scholarship. He played center for the Hornets. He was a member of the Class of 1971. He LOVED ASU. He had that famous “Bama State Spirit.” Elwood went on to earn his Master’s Degree at East Tennessee State University in 1973 and Educational Specialist Degree at Georgia State University. Elwood Moore’s love and respect of education is evidenced by his numerous degrees; the countless number of students and adults influenced through his career; and the affinity for lifelong learning instilled in his children. Mr. Elwood James Moore transitioned peacefully on March 13, 2019 at age 69. Elwood James Moore was preceded in death by his brother Alfred Moore (Connie) and is survived by his wife Kathleen Reger Moore, daughter Dr. Shannan Marie Moore, son Benjamin James Moore (Jocelyn), sister Dorothy Lee Moore Ross (Samuel), and brothers Dr. Benjamin Moore (Cherese), Linwood Moore, and Lutis Anthony Moore (Carol). He is also survived by four grandchildren: Jaden, Lexington, Janice, and Brooke. Additionally, he leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, other relative Celebration of Life Services for Mr. Moore will be held at 12:00PM Thursday, March 21, 2019 at Rainbow Park Baptist Church 2941 Columbia Dr, Decatur, GA 30034.
