Doris E. Cobette

Mrs. Doris Cobette was born on December 25, 1937, in Raleigh, North Carolina and moved to New York City at the age of three. She was one of two children and attended Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, New York. Thereafter, she worked for the New York Telephone Company for over 3 decades and served on her Co-op Management Treasury Board with honor and trustworthiness. On April 19, 1961, she married Mr. Alphonse Cobette and to this union three children were born, Jewel Cobette-Mitchel, Crystal Cobette-Davis, and Cheryl Cobette. In addition, she was stepmom to her beloved stepdaughter, Cherise Cobette-Weekes. The couple separated but remained married for 52 years until his passing in July of 2013. Doris was a straightforward woman, always keeping it real with kindness, humor, and respect. She loved her girls unconditionally and her grandsons were the apple of her eye. She was an excellent cook, and the family will miss her homemade chicken soup and Creole gumbo. She had a love for plants and with her green thumb she raised an indoor forest! Her favorite color was purple fitting for the queen that she was. She loved reading and had an enormous collection of sci-fi books and enjoyed watching horror movies. One of her favorite pastimes was betting on the horse races which she was most blessed with constant winnings. She was tech savvy and defied the stereotype that seniors cannot handle technology. To the family, she was Ma, Yabba, and Gramma-Dee. Our hearts are heavy as we mourn such tremendous loss. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Earl Bowler and Mrs. Maude Collins Bowler; sister, Carolyn Bowler; and her beloved daughter, Jewel Cobette-Mitchell. She is survived by her other beloved daughters, Crystal and Cheryl Cobette; her grandsons, Michael Anthony Mitchell and Willie Edward Williams III and her companion of 20+ years, Mr. Lindsey McCleese, who was relentless with his friendship and continuous loving attention towards her. She is also survived by a host of family and friends who will miss her dearly. Memorial Celebration of Life for Mrs. Doris E. Cobette will be held Saturday, February 24, 2024, 3pm in Chapel.
