David Mitchem, Jr.

David is a name with many meanings. To the Hebrews written about in the Bible it means “beloved”. To those of you reading this it means husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, or friend. David Mitchem, Jr. was born the oldest of four children to the late Inez and David Mitchem, Sr. on September 5, 1956 in Newark, New Jersey. David graduated from Arts High School in Newark, NJ where he lettered in baseball and track. He continued his education at Trenton State College, now known as The College of New Jersey, where he received his degree in Health and Physical Education. While attending college, David met and eventually married the love of his life, Harriette LaNiece Brown. To this union, two sons were born: Jarrod Michael and David Leon. Their home was always filled with love and laughter. Before Jarrod and Leon went off to college, you could always find David in the audience or stand at all their extra-curricular activities. He was often the “Dad Cab” for any of their friends needing a ride to or from an event. If you spent any time with David, you learned very quickly that he loved his family and his Dallas Cowboys. He was also an avid Fantasy Football enthusiast spending hours on Sunday setting up his team. You could also find him cheering on his beloved NY Nicks and NY Mets. David was employed by General Motors for more than 40 years, moving several times to advance his career. He was always willing to be a mentor and take on additional responsibilities as required. On November 13, 2022, David peacefully and quietly passed away at home. We rejoice knowing he resides in a place where there is no more pain or suffering. While he is no longer with us, he will forever remain in our hearts. David leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Harriette; his sons: Jarrod (Danika); and Leon, all from Atlanta, GA; his sisters: Sharon Stanley, Roselle, NJ; Cathy Mitchem, Linden, NJ; brother: Geoffrey Mitchem, Hillside, NJ: sisters-in-law; Carla Brown, Winter Haven, FL; Joyce B. Jones, Roselle, NJ; brother-in-law: Errol J. Brown, Winter Haven, FL; aunt: Mattie Bellinger, Bronx, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Celebration of Life Services for David Mitchem will be held on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at 11:00 AM. These services will be recorded and streamed live.
