Darryl Deroy Long

Darryl Deroy Long Sr. was born on January 8, 1961 in Boston, Massachusetts to the late Hubert & Eunice Long. He was the fourth son of the six children born to their union. Darryl is fondly thought of for his easy smile and manner. He never met a stranger and was a friend you would like to have. He was quick to offer a helping hand and was very supportive to others while serving as a confidant to many. Darryl was quite the jokester, funny and charismatic. He had a great sense of humor. He was also a great dancer and loved music. Darryl’s first marriage to Lafawn Williams produced two children, Ladacia and Darryl Jr. After the tragic loss of Lafawn, Darryl focused his energy on being the best father possible to his children. Years later, he was fortunate to reconnect with his high school sweetheart, Linda, and they continued their love story as they were married in 2004. Linda brought three little girls to the union and together they blended their lives into a loving family unit. Darryl was a true family man that devoted his life to loving his beautiful wife and their amazing children. He tirelessly and unselfishly worked to provide for his family. Darryl’s true joy came from time spent with his family through numerous vacations, game nights, and bowling. Darryl and Linda enjoyed spending quality time together and he loved to see her happy. He prided himself in attending all the children’s extracurricular activities from wrestling, dance, singing showcases, recitals, and track meets. The family could always count on him. One of his favorite things to do at home was to turn on the fireplace with his feet up in the leather recliner while watching a game or a Western. Darryl was not only an amazing father, but also an outstanding man. As a child, Darryl fell in love with the game of basketball. He played the position of point guard well into his 50s. While developing his skills on the courts of Boston, he earned the nickname “Ice” or “The Iceman” after George Gervin. These same skills were evident as he brought his game to Atlanta where his smooth moves and ability to slither through defenders earned him the moniker of “Snake”. Whether in Boston or Atlanta, all knew that he had game. He also enjoyed playing table tennis with his friends at the Redan Recreation Center. Darryl was an avid car enthusiast. You could often find him riding in one of his many notable “toys” like the 1966 yellow Thunderbird, or a Mercedes Benz, or a BMW, the Mazda Z or a Land Rover. He truly enjoyed his cars. Darryl joined Trailways, now Greyhound Lines, in 1985 where he was known as “D” or “DL.” He served at Greyhound for 35 years starting as a bag loader and ascended to the supervisor operations manager. He received numerous awards and accolades for his excellent leadership skills. He received “Employee of the Year” many times over. He was a superior supervisor and his colleagues not only respected him but also considered him to be family. He was passionate, driven and fair. Darryl went above and beyond his duties. He wanted to see his colleagues prosper and would offer any assistance he could to help them. Darryl D. Long age 59 passed on February 25, 2020. Celebration of Life service will be at 11AM Friday, March 6, 2020 at Ray of Hope Christian Church 2778 Snapfinger Rd Decatur, GA 30034. Final resting place Hillandale Memorial Gardens 6201 Hillandale Drive Lithonia, GA 30058. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2020 from 10AM-8PM at our SOUTH DEKALB CHAPEL.
