Brenda Joyce Powell

Brenda Joyce Jones-Ransom Powell was born on September 22, 1948, in Rockdale County, Georgia, to Annie Gilstrap-Jones and Leon Powell. She attended and graduated from J.P. Carr School in Rockdale County. In June of 1966, Brenda married Larry Ransom, and together they had three beautiful children. During her early years, Brenda joined Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she was an active choir member. She loved working with the youth, serving as a Sunday school teacher and choir director for the SunBeam Choir. Brenda went on to work for over 30 years at Grady Healthcare System, retiring as a pharmacy technician. As part of her role, she provided medication deliveries to people’s homes. Brenda was a proud member of the AFSCME Local 1644 Union, where she served as board Secretary, and was also a member of a traveling mass choir. She had a wide range of interests and loved cooking, singing, solving crossword puzzles, spending time with her family, reading her Bible, and attending church. Known as a “fashionista,” she had a love for buying new clothes. She is survived by her two children, Wilhelmena Ransom Mack and Khalila Ransom, and her stepdaughter, Monita Ransom. Brenda was preceded in death by her son, Stephen B. Ransom, as well as her mother, Annie Gilstrap-Jones, and father, Leon Powell. She cherished her role as a grandmother to her two grandsons, Kalen Ransom and Keith (Tichina) Mack Jr., and she was overjoyed by the addition of her three great-grandchildren, Khari Ransom, Kole Mack, and Kori Mack, who brought her immeasurable happiness. Additionally, Brenda is survived by her loving sisters, Betty Ann (Jerry) Butler, Pamela (John) Brown Sr., Joyce Lamar-Jones, and brothers Larry Jones and Martin (Sheryl) Green, along with her dear friend Angela Green and a large extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Brenda’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She will be remembered for her unwavering support, generous spirit, and the love she shared freely with others. Known for lighting up every room with her beautiful smile and kindness, Brenda never met a stranger. As the “life of the party,” she knew how to bring joy to any gathering, sharing her wisdom and warmth with everyone she encountered. Brenda’s memory will endure through the love, warmth, and strength she embodied throughout her life.
