Bettie Jean McCary

With hearts full of love and fond memories, we celebrate the vibrant life of Bettie Jean McCary. Bettie graced the world on July 6, 1945, in Coahoma, Mississippi, to Jessie & Lee Etter Hunter. She peacefully entered eternity on July 23, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at her residence. After graduating from Flint Northwestern High School in 1963, Bettie pursued higher education at Mott College, where she pursued a degree in Computer Science, highlighting her versatility and forward-thinking nature. Additionally, she studied American Sign Language (ASL). Bettie’s life exemplified determination, creativity, and profound love for her family. From an early age, she cultivated remarkable talents in cooking and sewing. A true entrepreneur, Bettie founded and successfully managed multiple businesses throughout her lifetime. Her daycare provided a nurturing environment for countless children, leaving a lasting impact on generations to come. In addition, her cleaning services brought comfort and cleanliness to homes across the community, while her catering expertise brought joy and delectable cuisines to countless special occasions and family gatherings. As a skilled seamstress, her hands stitched together garments that carried the essence of her passion and artistry. Beyond her professional achievements, Bettie was a devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, foster care mother, entrepreneur, friend, and a powerful prayer warrior, and cornerstone, always offering an open door, a listening ear, prayer, and a helping hand. Her warmth, kindness, and unwavering support uplifted those around her, creating a sense of unity and love that will continue to resonate. Bettie was an active member of Kingdom of Heaven Ministries in Flint, Michigan. She served devotedly in several roles, including as a Mother of the Church, on the Banquet Staff, in the children’s ministry, and as Pastor Lonnie W. Brown’s personal Intercessor. Furthermore, she used her talent as a tailor to make altar cloths and coverings for the offering baskets. Bettie was preceded in death by her grandparents Ruben & Lillie Mae Parchman and Frank & Bettie Hunter, her parents Jessie & Lee Etter Hunter, her son David L. Hunter, daughter Vanessa C. Betts-Rucker, sisters Janie McCraney, Elizabeth Hunter, Lettie B. Jennings, brothers, Jessie Jr., James & Frank Hunter, nieces Emily McCraney & Jacquline Robbs, and nephews Edward Reed & Delmonte Hunter. Bettie is survived by her loving daughter, Felicia L. Rawls; her cherished grandchildren, Ashudee Kirk, Jalicia Armor (Elias), Aquanique Rawls, Emmanuel Rawls, Davidion Armstrong, Alicia Colbert (Dexter); adored great-grandchildren, Tyler Kirk, Kodah Smith, Santana Rawls, Sa’veah Armstrong, siblings Lillie & Joyce Hunter, Stella Reed, and Charles Hunter, best friend Gloria Surls, and a host of relatives and friends who will forever hold her memory in their hearts. As we remember and celebrate Bettie’s life, we find solace in the memories, lessons, and prayers she leaves behind and the indelible mark she has made on our lives.
