Bessie Okafor

Bessie Okafor was born in Nnewi, Anambra State Nigeria to Joshua Okoye and Janeth Okoye in 1955. She was the youngest of three siblings which included Chudy Okoye and Joyce Okoye. Bessie successfully obtained a secondary school education at Nnewi Girls' Secondary School, Nnewi. Following that, in December 1977, she got married to Mr. David Okafor (currently Dr.Chuka Okafor). They proceeded to United States in 1980 for further studies. In 1985, she obtained a B.S degree at Michigan State University, East Lansing, Michigan. The following year she also, obtained M.S degree from the same academic institution.The marriage was blessed with three boys and one girl. She was a devoted and caring Christian mother. In 1988, Bessie and her family moved from East Lansing, Michigan to Selma, Alabama briefly before relocating and settling in the greater Atlanta, Georgia area. Once in Georgia, Bessie began her career in middle school education while earning additional certifications. She successfully purchased her first home in 1992 in South Dekalb County where she raised her growing children. She continued to be active in her local church. While there, Bessie invited her sister Joyce Okafor to live with her when she came to America from Nigeria. Bessie became involved in many Igbo based organizations in the Atlanta area as a way of giving back to her people. She made sure that her children accomplished their educational goals and started careers of their own. In 2007, she purchased a newer home in Fulton County and maintained her close and loving relationship with God, her church family, and her own family. Celebration of Life Services for Bessie Chinazor Okafor, age 60, will be held onSaturday, February 20, 2016 at 3:00PM at the South DeKalb Chapel of Gregory B. Levett & Sons Funeral Homes-4347 Flat Shoals Pkwy, Decatur Ga. Viewing/Visitation will be Friday, February 19, 2016 from 10-8pm also at the South DeKalb Chapel.
