Anthony Keith Staples

Anthony Keith Staples, also known as “Tone” or “Tony”, was born on June 26, 1964 in Manhattan, NY. His parents are Arlene Ella Staples, the late Jake Pheonix. He was an only child, but had a half-brother, Derrick Brown, and many brothers and sisters through the friendships he developed throughout the years. He is survived by his wife of 35 years Lisa McGreer-Staples, and his daughters Sherise Staples, Chantal Staples-O’Silas (Joshua), Jordan Staples, and Imani Staples. He is also survived by his in-laws Napoleon and Lula McGreer who loved him like a son, a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends to celebrate his transition. As a child, Tony was always considered special. He was inquisitive, and his mother knew he was destined to do great things. This lead him to be selected to attend the elite Brooklyn Technical High School. After high school, Tony pursued a degree in Information Systems at New York University. He met Lisa in 1985, and it was a whirlwind of romance and courtship and then they married in 1989. Genius is one of the words you could use to describe him – he had such an innovative mindset. He was a loving, supportive father and proud of his children and their accomplishments. He also was very people-oriented and had the ability to shine a positive light on everyone he met. Talk to any of his friends, and they could share stories of how Tony inspired or encouraged them in some way. He always made himself available to give advice and share perspective. He loved travel. He has visited Israel, Japan, Brazil, Peru, Mexico, Jamaica, and many other places. He loved his music too, and was gifted in music composition. He made beats, and his DJ name was Center Stage. You could find him watching and analyzing sports on any given Monday or holiday. His cheers and shouts would boom throughout the house on game day! Tony loved God, and while he was not perfect his heart was always in the right place. We celebrate because we know he is with his Savior. So today we honor, respect, and remember a good man who touched and enriched our lives in many ways. Let’s take a moment to shift our thoughts from how much we’re going to miss him to one of the many joyful and happy times that we shared with him –and there were many.
