Mrs. Annie L. Greer

Anne was born on April 24th, 1933, to Cleveland Lewis and Willie Ethel Savage in Vicksburg, Mississippi. She was blessed to grow up with three brothers, and four sisters, and in the same neighborhood as several of her cousins, who were all best friends. On Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at the blessed age of 89, Anne peacefully passed away in her sleep. She was a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt, great-great-aunt, and friend to many. She dedicated her life to improving life skills and uplifting others, especially her family. She attended Sacred Heart Elementary school and graduated from Coleman High School in 1952. She attended Herzl Junior College in Chicago and later transferred to Alcorn State University, where she obtained her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. She then began her career as a teacher at Armstrong Elementary in Greenville, Mississippi and later earned her Master’s Degree in Special Education at Jackson State University. Her teaching career spanned over fifty-plus years across the cities of Greenville and Leland, Mississippi, and Eudora, Arkansas. After retiring three times, she returned to teaching, where she concluded with her last year in 2020, with plans on returning prior to moving to Atlanta for health reasons. Anne was a strong woman of faith who loved the Lord, her family, her church, and her community. She was a faithful member of Balls Temple AME Church in Greenville, Mississippi, for sixty-plus years, eventually serving many years as a trustee. She was committed to her Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and continued her passion for the youth outside of school by being a long-standing member of the Progressive Arts & Civic Club. Her devotion as a parent was top of mind towards her only child Darryl, his wife, Monique, and their four children. She always stressed the importance of education, and family and always looked forward to attending the annual family reunion. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband D.S. Greer; sisters, Mary Lee Lewis Lacey (James), Hazel Lee Lewis Fletcher (L.R.); brothers, Cleveland Lewis Jr (Gary Ethel), Grover Lewis (Edna) and Willie Lewis (Alice). She leaves to carry on an awesome legacy and cherish her memory; her devoted son Darryl Greer I (Monique); grandchildren, Octavia London Greer Bryant (Anthony), Briana Ashlee Greer (Kevin), Darryl Greer II (Haley), Kayla Simone Greer (Robert); great-grandchildren, Kortlynn Bryant, Halo Scurry, and Londynn Bryant. Sisters Johnnie Mae Lewis (Louis), Dr. Mabel Lewis Williams (Melvin); goddaughter, Shirley Ann Wigfall (Jerry); godson, Mark Crawford; as well as a host of nephews, nieces, family, and close friends.
