Agnes Anita Gibbs

Agnes Anita Gibbs: sister, wife, mother, aunt, godmother, grandmother, great grandmother, dear friend and lover of life. Agnes was born on November 25th, 1934 to Oscar Archer and Muriel Wills in Georgetown, Guyana. She was the third eldest of eight children, including Kenneth, Maurice, Joan, Dennis, Richmond and Yvonne. Her passion for teaching was evident early on, as she became a student teacher at Grove school in Guyana following her high school studies. With an interest in furthering her education, Agnes moved to England to study nursing and midwifery through the General Nursing Council for England and Wales. She received her RN certificate, followed by a master’s degree in nursing. It was in England that she married, the late, Roland M. Gibbs Sr. with whom she had four children: Roland Jr., Rawle, Christopher and Ann. While in England, she would send clothing and other necessities for family and friends in need back to Guyana. In the years that followed Agnes moved to New York where she acquired a bachelor’s degree of Science in 1976 from St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn. She eventually retired, with 32 years of experience as a registered nurse from Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Centre and relocated to Decatur, Georgia with her husband. Compassionate, generous, loving, funny and witty are some of the many words that describe Agnes. She loved gardening, feeding her family, crocheting, knitting and embroidery. Upon joining the Episcopal Church of Holy Cross, she attended every church function that she could and even when she couldn’t, she enjoyed the virtual services. Agnes was a world-class traveler who enjoyed cruises and she often explored different islands. She was known as the fairy godmother as she often showered her loved ones with gifts on birthdays, graduations and holidays. Agnes made sure to keep her family connected through trips to New York, Guyana, Canada and throughout the Caribbean. As life began to slow down, she enjoyed weekly visits to the Farmer’s Market and watching her favorite game shows, such as Match Game, Concentration, The Price is Right, Supermarket Sweep and Family Feud, if Steve Harvey was the host. If Judge Judy was on, you could not talk to her until after the show was over. Agnes lived a long and admirable life, filled with rich experiences. Her legacy lives on through her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family, friends and loved ones. May she rest in eternal peace.
