Mrs. Jannie Ruth Cohen

Jannie Ruth Cohen was born on December 6, 1945, to the late Pernella Harris McCormick and the late Edgar Webster in Bessemer, Alabama. She was the first born of six children. She answered when God called her home on Saturday, July 15, 2023. She was preceded in death by her sisters Dorothy Jean, Deborah Ann, Sandra Jo and brother Frank, Jr. Jannie attended school in Jefferson County, Alabama and graduated a part of Brighton High School Class of 1964. Those early years of education formed many lifelong friendships. Jannie moved to New York City in 1964 where she began building the foundation of her career in banking. She worked hard and earned many promotions in various departments in the banking industry until she retired and relocated to Atlanta, Georgia in 2004. Although Christ was always a part of her life from a child, her level of service in the church grew. Jannie’s passion was always singing. She was a member of St. John’s Baptist Church and New Star Baptist Church (later known as Rising Star Baptist Church) in Jamaica, New York. She served as President of The Gospel Chorus for many, many years until she moved to Georgia. Once she relocated to Georgia, she joined the Peeks Chapel Baptist Church family where she served faithfully as part of the choir and Mother’s Ministry until her earthly departure. Jannie was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, friend, and church member. Anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her would more than likely have many stories of her warm, giving and generous spirit. She always made friends wherever she went. She was always willing to lend a helpful hand whenever needed and always with a loving smile. Let’s not forget how witty and funny she was. She will greatly be missed! She lived by the mantra “Let the works I’ve done speak for me.” Jannie created many happy memories for her family to cherish. She was happily married to Minister Leroy Cohen. She was a great mother to two daughters, Venice and Shenita. She was the proud grandmother of one grandson, Tyler and two granddaughters, Nicole and Ashley. Also left to cherish her memories are her brother Cecil (Odester) of Bessemer, Alabama, many cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends.
